Got an American
« on: October 31, 2012, 12:09:34 PM »
Headed off to my favorite gun shop and picked up a 30-06 American this morning. :)  I've got a mint Bushnell Custom 4x with post reticle to top it and I'll be sending in for the free cheek piece from Ruger. The gun fits me (and my budget) perfect and the 'ol "aught six" is as good as it gets for deer hunting. Judging from the reviews the gun's been getting I don't think I can go wrong. I'll report back after I take it to the range. ;)

Spanky remember to get a set of rings. They don't come with the rifle. Even though my scope only has a 40mm lens. I still have to get a high mount.

Just curious if you've got to the range to shoot the American.  Interested in your opinion of the rifle and how it shoots.

Bought me an American .308 today.  I'm glad the high mounts were mentioned above.   I don't have a scope for it yet and it might be a while before I get to sight it in.  I bought it just as a secondary gun and thought it was a good buy.

Got my American several months ago and am I ever glad I did.    This rifle out of the box is the most accurate 3006 rifle I have ever owned.     With Federal Fusion 180gr   I routinely get sub 1" groups at 100yds.   The trigger is superb.   you  can't go wrong with the RAR.

Glad it did well, the ones I have shot have been VERY accurate.

Just brought my American in 270Win home yesterday but I don't know when I will get a chance to shoot it.  I had my S-I-L make up some of my recipe handloads for a co-worker/friend's American in 06 a while back and they shot well.  He sighted it in at 200 yds and it put three rounds touching each other.  If this 270 will shoot half that good I will be grinning from ear to ear.

I'm kinda thinking one of the compact models would be a decent little rifle for myself and still be one my son could start shooting centerfire with.   Not one for synthetic but thinking "starter rifle" first and the rest after that.

Too bad they don't make one in .223--would be nice for cheap knocking around the woods rifle--I have a .30-06 Hawkeye but consider it too powerful for general use other than hunting.

Spanky remember to get a set of rings. They don't come with the rifle. Even though my scope only has a 40mm lens. I still have to get a high mount.

I was able to mount a 4-12x40 nikon on mine last night with medium rings.   I could possible fit a 44mm on there, but it would be very close.

Thanks for the scope info. I haven't even taken the gun out of the box yet but when I do I'll take a look at the Nikon's. I originally planned on a 4x for it but decided to go with a variable instead.
I've got a couple Redfield Revolutions on other rifles and I really like them too.

I got one in .308 last fall..and got a button buck about 5 minutes into the season and about a half mile from my house.  I am real pleased with the rifle..a lot of great features at an entry level price tag..

Nope  Lloyd  I wasn't bragging.. but you will note, I didn't say I was shooting from the house!  No, I had to step outside the back door.. ;) ;D ;D ;D   Actually, it was in a nearby woods..or rather, between 2 small wooded areas surrounded by corn and soy fields.
Sometimes though, when I an shooting longer distances, I have to use hollow points.  I fill them with salt... just so the meat will keep until I get there!  ;) ;D ;D
