NJ unions run off emergency help crews. They fight against their own people.

 Callous Big Labor–New Jersey turns away non-union utility workers  By Rick Manning — Americans come together in a crisis, unless those Americans are in a closed shop union state that has been hit by the biggest natural disaster it has ever faced.
It has been reported by WAFF news in Seaside, New Jersey that non-union utility workers from Alabama have been told their help is not needed because they don’t pay union dues.
While Governor Chris Christie has been busily singing Kumbaya with Obama, his state has raised a gigantic help not wanted sign to the 93 percent of American workers who have chosen to reject the union label.
Rather than helicopter touring photo ops, perhaps Christie should issue an emergency executive order the way Governor Pete Wilson did in California after the 1989 earthquakes devastated much of the infrastructure in the Bay area.
What Wilson did is change the contracting game providing incentives for getting the job done early, and broke the labor stranglehold on the reconstruction that allowed California to be rebuilt in record time.
That would be leadership that Christie could show that would mean something to getting the emergency clean up done rapidly, power restored and the people of New Jersey somewhat back to normal.
Instead, right now, we have images of devastation and stories of those who are most qualified to help from around the nation being told, get the heck out of New Jersey.
Sadly, at a time when the rest of America wants to pull together and restore the Jersey shore, Big Labor and the laws they have pushed through Trenton put up a big NO HELP WANTED sign.
And in the end, it is the people of New Jersey who suffer at the hands of these union thugs who care more about their power and control than the people who are suffering grievously in their state.
Shame, shame, shame.

That union must have the same public relations guy as the ILWU.  The day will com when it will boomerang on them.

Unions may have been needed at one time but they have become too big, too powerful. and too greedy and in many cases corrupt.   IMO the UAWU was a major factor in the near death of the US auto industry.

No surprise here. As soon as I heard the governors and mayors say there would be no red tape or other obstacles to getting things fixed, I smiled and thought otherwise.

I think of some of the unions in the same respect as the EPA,OSHA and some other necessary evils. At one point in history they created some much needed reforms but now we get very little advancements in return for the money, grief ,red tape  and energy they require. As a retired Teamster I witnessed what we referred to as a "union mentality" by both the union and the company. Both parties would end up fighting over petty issues and the result would be less profit and productivity for all concerned.

This should have been front page all accross America and the top story on tv and radio. The affected people should know who is keeping their power off and why. If the ones from here are turned away they'll go where they are welcomed. POWDERMAN.

You won't see much of this on the news, because it might have a negative affect on Obama.  He is supported by the Unions, therefore he supports the unions.  got a feeling Christie is in the same boat.

As a member of the IBEW,my company sent crews to help from Arizona. OK, I like to work and fill my pockets as much as the next guy,but when lives are at stake, the simple crapola must take a back seat to helping folks out.The National union ought to be ashamed. This could have easily been worked out,keep non-union crews well separated from union etc.etc.

Yeah, the truth of the story is being changed, once the outrage against the union spread for doing something like this. The only thing the media and the union forces, along with a government that protects unions could do, is to just say it never happened.
We can't have any black marks on the unions. Its all about protecting the publics view of unions, so just claim it never happened. Just call all those that said it did happen, liars. The government run media does this very well, because they are compulsive liars when its needed to fit the mold.

Saw this on the news yesterday or the day before.
Line crews from Alabama drove 24 hours with their trucks and equipment to NYC to help restore power after the storm only to be told they were not needed or wanted because they are not UNION!!!
They were called scabs and other names by the local power crews on sight.

I would have told them next time you can just suffer, we are busy else where!

The only thing that should be labelled as "unwanted" are the unions themselves. Not just this particular band of thugs but ALL unions in this country. The word "parasite" comes to mind when I think of unions... something that latches onto a host (our country) and drains the life out of it.

At my first job out of college, my boss picked up a box with a computer monitor and moved out of the way so he could reach something. Every electician in the building walked out. Union turf. My boss is  the one that got in trouble for it too. Similar thing happened to me years later when I removed a keyboard from one computer to go use it on another computer that was being used for a demo. Lost all respect for unions after the first incident. All following incidents have just reinforced my beliefs.
