What Front blade to go with Skinner Peep?
« on: November 02, 2012, 02:30:02 PM »
Hello Folks... I finally found a .44 Mag barrel after months of searching. I have a Skinner Black Gold peep on the way... I am cutting this 22" barrel down to 18" and will tap and install a new blade. I can harvest the front ramp from a new .30/30 barrel to reinstall (the .30/30 is being chopped/braked/scoped)... or is there a better option out there for a one piece ramp/blade that can be tapped in the .44 Mag shorty???

If it were me, I'd use the appropriate Skinner front sight. That way you'd have a matched set. Cutting a dovetail in the barrel isn't much more of an effort than drilling and tapping.

What he said, I've done several dovetail slots by hand, it's easy.  ;)

No offense to Larry Potterfield, but I ain't taking a file to my round barrel...
So, taking the dovetail option off the table... what are the blade/ramp assemblies available for these barrels??? I check the diameter at 18" and the barrel is 0.740"... looking to drill and tap in a blade ramp...

The other option for dovetail slots is a mill, done that too, they used to make a fixture too for hand cutting.

See Peep and Firesights in the FAQs.

I bought more sight sets for my Buffalo Classic than I care to admit.  Last year I settled on a set from Skinner.  The back is the Black Gold, and the front is the one Skinner selected.  A serrated brass post that I thought was way to skinny for that long barrel.  Was I ever wrong.  I took it to the range expecting my 100 yard groups to be fat because of trying to center that skinny blade in the rear aperture.  Not so at all.  I got just as good a group as I would have with a scope.  Took it hunting.  My hunting here in VA is always in heavy timber where good lighting in infrequent.  But how easy it was to find that skinnty blade and center it.  Super fast and accurate for target AND hunting.  The buck I took last year was in the woods, about 75 yards away, a very long shot to what I'm used to in the mountains.  I put the rifle to my shoulder and instantly saw that brass front blade against the deer's shoulder.  He fell in his tracks.
Before that, I tried the factory sights.  No good in the shaded woods.  I then bought a Williams sight with the target adjustment knobs, using the factory front sight.  Great for the range, but useless in the woods.  Finally I bought the Skinner sight.
Hint:  The rear Black Gold and the brass front sight make a striking contrast to the blue of the B/C.  To make it even more attractive, I filled the "Buffalo Classic" lettering on the barrel with gold paint.  An easy job that requires no talent.  It has become my favorite rifle.
Off topic a bit, but I have developed a spine issue that requires me to use a walking stick until I can get surgery.  In interim, this season, I plan to install a sling of some sort so I can carry the B /C on my left shoulder as I make my way thru the woods with the stick in my right hand.  I don't think one can do better for a deer rifle than a B/C with Skinner sights.

I meant to say also:  Get rid of that hooded front sight.  Ain't no way to find the front sight in the shade if it's got a hood on it preventing the available light from gettin to it.  Hooded front sights are for target shooters.
One other thing:  About a year ago, there were numerous threads about removing the front sight from a B/C.  It seemed they were in so tight that they could not be removed.  I have one of the newer ones, and it tapped right out with a hammer and wooden rod.  They were installed left to right, so should be removed right to left.

Brownells should have what you need.

Brownell's has MORE than I need... the problem is narrowing it down to one item that will perform with this set-up... Here is what I ordered already;

Williams Fire sight 3/8" dovetail blade; 0.300 height and .340" (8.6mm) wide
Red Fire Sight fits 312M
Mfr Part: 56441

Marbles Front Ramp; 0.225" height and .340" (8.6mm) wide
Mfr Part: 072331

The total height of 0.525" should work out pretty close... but I am open to ordering another set in to send to the smith when I ship my barrel... suggestions?

If you've done and redone the calcs you should be okay. But, keeping Murphy's Law and turnaround time in mind, I'd order a taller and shorter as well. They can always be returned. Sounds  like you'll have a nice rig when you're  finished. Post a pic when you're done, I'd like to see it.

Mike,

Is your BC a 38-55 or 45-70? The Black Gold version of the Skinner sure is nice looking.

The Firesight, shorty ramp and WGRS combination on one of my 45-70 Handis in the FAQs Peep and Firesights link is the same setup I used on my first 44mag Handi, it worked fine with 225gr LE ammo at 100yds.

I went through the sight FAQ's before posting... interested if there are new options... I looked at the Williams Shorty and Streamlined ramps, but they are only 0.250" wide and I wanted something "beefier." To be on the safe side, I took Craigster's advice and ordered three blade heights of the FireSight dovetails coupled with the Marbles ramp (.340" wide)... will give this combo a try... may end up ordering a Skinner brass blade also... I have a Skinner black gold peep and brass blade on my Henry Golden Boy and Brass Frontier rifles.

Update; just for the heck of it, I went ahead and ordered a 3/8" dovetail brass Skinner front blade 0.50" high... trimmable... this will fit in the Marbles dovetail ramp... I will see which combo I prefer.

I looked at those also in the Brownell's inventory... but went with the Marbles ramp instead.
