Rifle Barrel on Shotgun Frame
« on: November 02, 2012, 04:19:39 PM »
I found a 20 ga. topper in my collection of firearms.  I have no idea where it came from.  Is it possible to install a rifle barrel into the shotgun barrel and convert it to a rifle?

That would be a liner or an insert, lots on inserts in the H&R Shotgun forum. Liners are usually done by gunsmiths, either would need to be a low pressure chambering on the shotgun frame.

Quick, would 357 Mag and 44 Mag work?

With a incert it could make a dandy Bee, 25 or even 32/20!
These last two the 25&32/20 calibers are joys to shoot but care needs to be taken loading cause the brass is mighty thin! A better plinker/pot caliber has not been made.
It's a fun/easy one to get involved with casting too. Making the whole thing cheaper aswell! One could cast allot of 86 or 115g slugs from a small amount of wheel weights or scrap lead!

There was a cello who made up a 25-20 like this some years back. Epoxied the liner in and had allot of fun loading and shooting it!!

Probably, although primer issues can be a problem on them with the large firing pin of SB1 shotgun frames, current production H&R 357 and 44 mag SB1 frames come with rifle size firing pins that eliminates the issue.

I have a 22 Hornet 12ga insert that Larry made me, it shoots great, primers did crater a bit tho, group shot at 35yds.

I think a 38spl. 'woods loafer' insert would be the cat's meow.
