Something strange in the woods.

So I live on the edge of several hundred untouched acres in SW Ohio.  That's not a whole lot...unless you're in SW Ohio.  The point of this story is that I heard a call on several nights that I've never heard before, usually after 2am.  The 1st one was close, say within 30 yards, but on the other side of a fence row full of honeysuckle.  It sounded a lot like a peacock, but several octaves lower and much,  much bigger.  I could hear it walking around in the heavy leaves and it sounded bipedal.  (I looked for the bigfoot section, but I guess it's gone now, lol.)  Then last night I head a different call but the same...voice...at a medium distance, say 200-300 yards.  It sounded like a man trying to sound like a woman yelling, "WAUGH".  It repeated every 5 seconds or so for several minutes.  I eventually got a recording on my phone, but I'm trying to figure out how to get it onto the computer so I can put it on YouTube.  If I figure it out, I'll put a link up.  The second call kind of reminded me of a fox, but much lower and smoother sounding.  Anyone have any ideas?

Does anyone in your area raise Elk or Exotics?  It could be a female making their love call.  Cow Moose make a low Waaaaaaagh call during the rut.  I suspect it could be a member of the Deer family.

Bigfoot section is gone, but this is where this thread will be in a day or so.

WylieKy, how long had you lived there before you heard this ? If it had been for some time it would seem like you would have heard this before. I'm not sure about Ohio, but here we have coyotes and they can make some very strange noises.  Even sound like a human running through the brush at night. You may want to try one of those game cameras , at least for some peace of mind knowing what it is .

I've had turkeys make some very weird noises at night as well, and also sound like an army of apes walking through the leaves 10' from my tent...... :-[

You need a couple of dogs.
Two good hounds could locate and hold whatever it is out there.
Then you can decide whether to shoot it and bury it,,, or eat it. ;)

I would bet it is a fox too.  They make a very unusual sound at times.  Sneak out and do a little calling with a mouse squeaker and you may get a peak who's making the noise ;)

I'm pretty familiar with fox and coyotes, and I@m fairly positive it wasn't one of those.  @anna, I've lived here, specifically, for about a year, but lived next door for most of my childhood and teenage years.  The emu possibility intrigues me (like I said, it sounded a lot like a peacock but much lower).  Anyone know what kind of sounds they  make? There are a couple of farms in the area that have emus, but none close.  However, I could see one escaping and setting up shop in the woods there.  I also thought about some kind of critter migrating through.

I haven't gone out looking for tracks, but it's on the agenda.

To me, a fox sounds like a screeching old lady, just as you described.

WylieKy as I'm sure you are aware the state of Ky has been building an elk herd for some years now and those suckers travel great distances.  I'm a bit over a hundred miles west of you in Indiana and back mid summer about 15 miles west of me a guy hit and killed a large bull elk with his car.  As the wreck was being investigated two more were seen in the area.  Swimming the Ohio river isn't that big a task for them.

I'm still laying odds it's a fox.  My friend came over tonight for dinner and said one has been making those noises for the last couple of weeks by his house.  Just a coincidence since I didn't mention your post.  He saw the fox making that noise at my cat too.  There was a fox family that lived in my backyard and the kits came up on my deck and stumbled around.  It is a very odd sound and would seem like it would be coming from something different than a fox IMO.


Hope you get to see it making the sounds in person.

 Had a similar experience when I was about 10 years old, walking a far pasture fenceline behind my uncles house with my trusty daisy 99 champion in hand. I was stalking a flock of sparrows of all things, and a thick wall of brush kept visability impossible to my right, on the other side of the fence. As I slowly walked, I distinctly heard footsteps crunching in the leaves somewhere behind the wall of brush, literally matching my own, with no attempt to be quiet. Even at that age I remember reasoning that the pace HAD to match that of a person and I thought maybe it was my uncle or a neighbor. It was that thought on my mind as I remember hearing whatever it was deeply exhale but I don't remember the exact sound. I began quickly walking away from the fence and torward the distant house. Then I ran, feeling eyes on me all the way back. When I told my uncle he more or less ignored my fright and just remarked there was no neighbors and noone down there. I decided it coulda been a bigfoot and maintained that when telling friends my story. Thinking about it now, I guess it might have been a cow out of the fence, slowly walking through the woods, the heavy crunching and slow steps make it seem possible as does the deep exhale. Other than that, I don't know what else it could have been.  Jeff

Study after study has shown how dangerous distracted driving is yet people continue to talk on their cell phones while driving. Driving in the U.S. requires your full attention. Many states and countries have made it illegal to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and the federal government should follow their lead. Banning the use of cell phones while driving would have the added benefit of making the no-texting law enforceable.
