FILLERS IN REDUCED LOADS, RINGING CHAMBERS
« on: February 10, 2004, 02:30:04 PM »
IVE BEEN READING ALOT ON OTHER SITES ABOUT DACRON AND POLYESTER FILLERS.  THE GENRAL WISDOM IS THAT IF YOU LEAVE AN AIR SPACE BETWEEN THE FILLER AND THE BULLET IT CAN RING CHAMBERS.  SEEMS THE IMPACT OF THE FILLER AGAAINST THE BASE OF THE BULLET IS WHAT CAUSES THE PROBLEM.  ANYONE OUT THERE EVER USE A PINCH OF COTTON FROM A COTTON BALL PUSHED DOWN OVER THE POWDER? SEEMS TO ME THE COTTON IS SO LIGHT AND IS PROBABLY BURNED UP BY THE POWDER AS IT IGNITES THAT THERE SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM RINGING CHAMBERS.  ALSO I HAVE ABOUT 60 REDUCED LOADS MADE UP THIS WAY IN 30-30 AND 30/06 AND NOW IM AFRAID TO USE THEM.  IVE SHOT THEM IN THE PAST WITH NO PROBLEM. I SEEK YOUR GUIDANCE AND WISDOM.

I've only tried cotton, the only issue I've ever seen is if you have a muzzle tamer. Muzzle tamers will get clogged with the filler and eventually cause a hazardous situation.

Reduced Loads

USARO4,
I have recently heard talk about ringing chambers too and I've been loading ammunition for over 30 years.

I have never used a filler.  I won't bore you with the quantity of loadings with reduced loads of 15 grains or less in 30-06, 308, 7mm TCU, 30-30 and 444 Marlin and many more.  I've used cast bullets with most reduced loads.  My loads shoot minute of angle out to two hundred yards and minute of Ram at 500 meters in a French Mas 1936.

The problem that I've had with reduced loads is double charging the cases with powder.  That is exciting and I have two rifles that have met their demise with that scenario.

To solve that problem, I have developed loads with Reloader 7, IMR 4759, AA 5744 and IMR 4227 that if doubled, the bullet will not fit in the case.

I still have several loadings that I very carefully load with 9.2 grains of IMR 7625 and a 444 Marlin with 14 grains of that powder too.  I load 9.5 grains behind a Saeco #316 (150 grain) 30-30 bullet  for my 30-30 10" TC and the accuracy out to 300 and 400 meters is incredible.

About a year ago, I saw an excellent treatise on fillers.  I'm not sure, but I think it was on Graybeard's forum.  In essence, the article said you could use fillers, or you could not.  It depended on what the filler was and the age of the rifle.  It was well written and he cited his research which convinced me.  He mentioned that older rifles tended to ring with synthetic fillers (Dacron), while if used with a natural filler such as cornmeal or kapock did not.  Maybe someone still has the artilce.

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE REPLIES.  I AM CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT I READ ON THE FORUMS ABOUT SPACE BETWEEN THE BULLET BASE I TAP MY FILLERS DOWN BUT I USE COTTON WHICH IS A NATURAL FIBER.  I SHOULD SPECIFY THAT I USE FAST BURNING PISTOL POWDERS SUCH AS GREEN DOT AND UNIQUE FOR MY REDUCED LOADS.  IT SEEMS HAROLDCLARK USES REDUCED LOADS OF RIFE POWDERS WOULD THIS MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE CONTREVERSIAL SUBJECT OF RINGING CHAMBERS?

Also note that most studies show that the use of fillers in bottlenecked cases tend to run to a higher percentage of ringed chambers, bulged barrels and pressure problems.

One time a few years ago, a speaker made reference to someone telling him that "it is a natural substance, so it should be good for you".  The speaker responded with "So is syphillis, but I know don't want it".

I attend the monthly Black Powder Cartridge Shooting Match at our club.  That is where I hear all the talk about ringing chambers with smokeless powder and fillers.  One of the shooters has actually had it happen or knows someone that it happened to.  These are straight walled cases.  Who knows anything for certain.  This sounds a lot like information from the notorious "They Brothers".  They say!!  Who says?  They say!  Oh yeah, who are they?  I coined them to be the "They Brothers".

I do have two buddies that use dacron puff fillers all of the time.  They shoot two days a week like I do and they have never "Ringed" a chamber.

I really don't care 'cause it is just another step in the loading process that I have yet to find a use for.  I have chronographed reduced loads in bottle neck rifle and handguns that have no filler and to beat all were loaded on a Dillon 550 Progressive reloader at the rate of 70 rounds every 15 minutes.  The extreme spread is less than 40 fps in the worst and 20 something in the best runs.

I don't think we will live long enough to test everything.

Keep on shooting and bull shooting.
