« on: November 03, 2012, 04:39:08 AM »

one bad hog  havent posted on here in a while but figured you guys might get a kick out of this. 5 rounds of buckshot wasnt enough to stop this big boy before he ran me over and got a hold of my foot pretty good. a few stitches, a chunk taken out of the bone, and lots of antibiotic for the next few days was the result

Glad you didn't come out any worse than you did. Did the hog ever go down from the buckshot after he cut you ?

My boar hog got pi$$ed at me one time and tore my leg up pretty good. I had to hit him with a shovel to get him away from me so I could get out of the pen. Keep in mind... he's a tame pig. No way in heck would I want a wild hog tearing into me... no way!!

I met a guy in Fla who had all the flesh missing from the back of his calf.  one bite from a wild boar.
I've always wanted to kill a wild hog, but I'd choose one of those 15 pounders.

Here's what I know about hogs:  (1) they are omnivorous, which means they eat anything, including human flesh; (2) they do not like humans as I believe sub-consciously they know we are dangerous to them; (3) they are bad tempered and easily angered: (4) I have no doubt that many people who 'go missing' have wound up as hog poo on the bottom of the forest floor, and (5) I have had the sorry experience of having to shoot hogs off the bodies of dead soldiers the hogs were rooting into, and it wasn't just 'into' as they had already taken most of the appendages and were looking at the rest as a buffet table.
Hogs can and will killya and eatya.  When you are in their territory you need to keep a sharp watch and your 'protection' at the ready.  You can rarely hear them approach unless the ground is dry and the flora brittle, they rarely grunt unless they are feeding (and hopefully not on you).  I would consider them a 'shoot on sight' critter, just like a large Black Bear, or any Brown Bear or Grizzly within 50 yds of you.  jmo.

rem 700-3, that's pretty much my experience as well.  I do, however, think that there are a lot of people who have the mistaken belief that hogs are all blood-thirsty killers that attack everything they see walking around on two legs.  Generally, they will attack when hurt or cornered. . .and sometimes just for the heck of it, but that seems to be rare.  But that doesn't mean I don't try to keep my distance.

I'm taking a group on a hunt in March and we meet next week.  I will be showing them a tusk (actually out of the hog in my avatar) to remind them that these are not defenseless animals.  One guy will be bow-hunting.  I plan on going with him with my AR and a .40 on my belt. . . just in case.

Yeah...I agree that they can be a bit dangerous....not normally but on occasion....just like people.  The one I took a couple weeks ago was just plain bullet proof.  She was hit right and still needed a follow up and came back to life.  Here's the 2nd vid on the "dead Hog".

Geez-Louise Doug.  The FIRST shot is supposed to go in the EAR HOLE.

Looks just like me trying to follow up on one that my son shot in the middle of a field.  We chased it into the woods, as I am firing my 1911 trying to put it down, hitting the little 65-pounder three times BEFORE putting one in the ear hole to finish it.  We turned it into hamburger before the Processor ever had the chance.

Are we sure?
Deer and Bees will not eat thier kills, a Hog and his buddies will make short work of a person, heck you should hear them crunch and munch on their friends bones at the bone pile.

Yes, they can be very dangerous up close.  But, I'm betting a hundred times more people are killed or seriously injured by domestic dogs every year than  by wild hogs.  The concept of being afraid of them while just walking through the woods is fairly amusing to me.  And yes, I've spent my life walking the deep woods of Tennesee, Mississippi and Virginia.

Sorry to jump back in again, and no disrespect to Tommy.  But, the picture is in no way shocking to me.  Take a close look.  It is an extremely minor wound.  It is absolutely nothing compared to what a pitbull or German Shepard can and will do to people every day.  Not to mention the daily accidents of people with lawn mowers and chainsaws.

I spent a summer working in an Emergency room, and that cut would not even warrant immediate treatment.   He would have been have required to sit and wait until the serious cases were all taken care of first.

The good news is, he'll have an interesting "war story" to tell his grandchildren about his wild bore hunt.

Best, Mannyrock

I'm more afraid of a swarm of bees that can kill you before you can get out of the wooods or a tick that can give you Lymes taking you out for weeks.

Manny, I agree not to be scared of them, but be wary when you know they are around. I do think if as many pepole tried to keep them as pets as they do dogs, of your description, there would be as many or more accidents as pit bulls, shepards and similar breeds. Statistics can be spun easly, compare apples to apples. If people kept bullsharks in their swiming pools there would be more shark attacks.
deernhog, yup I agree about the bees nest/swarm being more intimidating.

It could have gone in any direction it wanted, I was not on a wooded game trail, but typical Florida open cattle field, spotted with the occasional palmetto island, it came out of a palmetto island and beelined straight at me. We were not working them with dogs, it was not running for it's life. It chose to charge. I've seen them do the same to cattle. They are smart, dangerous and will protect their territory. If you invade their space by accident or by intent, know they may well charge.
Hunters, hikers, or campers, be forewarned, it may have never happened to you yet, but it does happen.
.........maybe a Skunk Ape hiding in the palmetto island threw it at me.......   :o

Hogs don't charge given the option.  Perhaps it just didn't see you.  They are afraid of people.

Dummies that get themselves hurt buy cutting off a hogs only escape route is no evidence at all.  They can't see well and will run into/over you.

Being  raised  up  on  a  hog farm  , I  can  asure  you   when   you  catch  one  of  mama  sows  piglets  an  he  starts  squealling.  You  better   be  close  to  the  fence.
