Here's what I know about hogs: (1) they are omnivorous, which means they eat anything, including human flesh; (2) they do not like humans as I believe sub-consciously they know we are dangerous to them; (3) they are bad tempered and easily angered: (4) I have no doubt that many people who 'go missing' have wound up as hog poo on the bottom of the forest floor, and (5) I have had the sorry experience of having to shoot hogs off the bodies of dead soldiers the hogs were rooting into, and it wasn't just 'into' as they had already taken most of the appendages and were looking at the rest as a buffet table.
Hogs can and will killya and eatya. When you are in their territory you need to keep a sharp watch and your 'protection' at the ready. You can rarely hear them approach unless the ground is dry and the flora brittle, they rarely grunt unless they are feeding (and hopefully not on you). I would consider them a 'shoot on sight' critter, just like a large Black Bear, or any Brown Bear or Grizzly within 50 yds of you. jmo.
