.....and what does Swamp call it when a hog repeatedly changes direction to get at you?

So now you have the timerity to call me a liar? ::)

I grew up around Iowa woodlots and farms. I've seen more hogs, free roaming and penned, than you will ever dream of seeing.

And you....sir....do not know horse $#it from apple butter if you think a hog will not deliberately target a human for mayhem! When a big boar realizes it is the target, some will flee, others will take offense and go after the source of their irritation.

......as noted in the quoted source above, they can be aggressive. Now show us the source for your claim that they aren't.

If you wanna come up here, I can arrange for you to enter a large hog lot with a sling shot, and just one boar, to test your claim that they will not target a human for attack. However you will need to sign a quit claim form for damages/injuries.

We had hundreds of them and I've spent many a day cutting them.  Maybe you just don't remember what happened.  I'm not afraid of any hog wild or domestic.

No I remember quite well, and I spent my time cuttin' pigs, and I spent my time moving the boars from one enclosure to another. I also did my share of culling the wild ones.....they can and do get aggressive.

Maybe YOU don't remember very good. ::)

Some people can say what thay wont to, pigs will attack you, your dog, other pigs and I have seen one attack a tire on avery large truck. This pig,a boar hog had a 300 acre pasture to run away in but he chose to charge over 150', thru a fence to hit the tire on a 10 wheel truck, then he ran off. At about 5 years old I had a boar grab My shirt sleeve and pull me into the pen. If My Aunt had not been near and able to remove a good portion of his head with a grubing hoe I am sure I would be pig poo. I have been chasedwheen there was plenty of room for them to run away. I have seen people cut when there were many way for the hog to get away. Most will run away, some wiil come to you no matter what other options they have. Hogs don't do so well in the wild by being scared or nice and they do well. People who don' thank that a hog will attack, probably think that Sen. Feinstein is pretty. And as Forest Gump said " Thats all I've got to say"

I can't believe these old wives tales continue to exist.

Different experience for different people I guess.  I've raised, worked, shown,  judged , hunted and taken pocine classes in college.  I've never had a hog challenge me (no matter how big the boar or sow, or what breed).  The only one that came close to getting upset with me was a 60 lb. Javalina sow when I got between her and her litter.

Those are military issue leather desert boots but those who haven't served wouldn't know that.

I'm a bit surprised they stapled the wound closed, given the chance of infection I would have thought they would have left the wound open. or at least allowed for drainage.

A pigs mouth is full of germs and bacteria.

From someone who didn't grow up with hogs, I have a simple observation to make.

Hogs have an intellect that is equal to or greater than dogs.  They are large powerful mammels that have survived for eons in the harshest of environments, surrounded by large preditors.  Nature has equipped them with extremely deadly tusks, that appear to be far more than would be needed for simple rooting.

Accordingly, if a large hog is totally PO'd at an animal (including a human) who is attacking or frightening it, I can see no logical reason to think that it wouldn't aggressively go after the culpret.   I don't see how, from an evolutionary standpoint, they could have survived  for so long by only having a "flight" defense (as opposed to a "flight and fight defense") when confronted by danger.  A lowly cow will, so why not a hog?

Another way of putting it?  Why would a 200 pound tusker attack something when threatened?  Because it CAN!
