Handi Stocks modifications.
« on: November 03, 2012, 10:05:01 AM »
I got my hands on a really old Handi at a show. it was cheap but I was afraid the older frame would be a poor candidate for stubbing. the stocks were much narrower than my Handis and much much more comfortable.

I was wondering if anyone had cut down their handi stocks to make them narrower and more comfortable. Ive reshaped stocks on old worthless .22s before but i wasn't concerned about recoil damaging them.  Would it be safe to run my stock across the bandsaw a thin it out a bit? has anyone done it? any pics of nice modded stuff that has not been shared?

Thanks
 Don

I have often wondered that myself. I will be watching this with interest.

See Reshaping Stocks in the FAQs, quite a few have done it.

I've done it successfully; shortened stocks, modified combs and removed pistol grips.  Just don't cut into the stock bolt hole.

I've done it too. Used a dremel tool with sanding drum for the majority, but ordinary band saw to shorten the stock, hand saw and square to remove the pistol grip. I just removed anything that didnt feel right- avoiding the stock hole. I figure its just wood and cheap to replace if i really screwed up. I slapped a little misc wood stain on it, finished off with some 0000 steel wool, then several coats of boiled linseed oil and a final coat with buffed JPW. Not exactly pretty, but now fits the way I want.

I've reshaped all my handi's, never did like the thick stock.Instead of stain I like textured spray paint and then go over it with whatever collor spray paint you want it to be. It seems to hold up well and touch up is easy.

I think Fred did a great job reworking his ultra stock!
