I know,I ain't supposed to do it but.......
« on: November 03, 2012, 03:06:22 PM »
I'm not supposed to be trapping because of my back.I can't stand it.There are some real shallow sloughs with rats in that are going to freeze out close by the house.I started a program to relocate the muskrats to my garage/fur shed on stretchers. My wife has asked if she could learn to trap so I used this as an excuse to go set traps. We put out baited and lured 2 trap floats on these shallow sloughs. The very first set I ripped the back of my right hip boot out on barb wire in the water.Man that water is cold! I broke through an old rat run and fell face first in the black slough mud.I later stepped in an unseen run the rats were using, lost my balance and sat down in the water.I now have 3 lumps in my throat. My wife picked all her spots to make sets on based on fresh  sign.As we were leaving there were 2 rats swimming  right towards her last 2 sets. She wants to check her traps before she goes to bed tonight.I may have created a monster.
I did find 3 old dry bank dens with mink tracks in the sand by the entrances.Going to set them up tomorrow.Oh I'm stiff and sore but I'll live.Bill

My wife is a muskrat catching machine!!She used up the traps I set aside for mink to extend "her"muskrat line. The high was 30 degrees and it snowed all day.We moved off the small spots to the bigger water to gain some open water trapping time. She conks out about 7:30 or 8:00 P.M tired from her day in waders in the water.Bill

Wish we had some rat numbers to get worn out on. The boy and I start on the river for 5 day run next week and it don't look to good. Seems to get worse every year.

Bill, glad you are able to get yourself--wet.
Just got back from a bit of trapping--rat numbers are in the toilet.Mink and coon sign was non-existant.Spent way to many hours hauling a boat through the woods, and breaking ice. And not enough time skinning.

Tom I watched rats cruising the shoreline last night  while setting more traps.Forget the spots close to the main roads. There are guys road trapping.I've been driving back in to spots off the beaten path. One small slough has 13 big rat houses on it.There's fresh material on each house daily as they're building ever night.I am tired and just about crippled up.I'm doing too much walking in the muck.Man am I rusty skinning rats it took a long time to skin the first 2 catches.Coon sign thick back on these little spots.Found some ducks that look like mink killed and ate.
Do any of the trap supply dealers have bottles of Advil and industrial size tubes of Icy Hot.I'm running low on rat lure  and the other stuff.
Got to go get ready to run traps soon as my wife gets off work here pretty quick.Bill

Glad you have rats Bill, never saw a new hut this year.Did have a few small feeder huts, but no full blown rat houses. Raptors took 15% of my catch on one pond.

I quit trapping years back. There is just not enough fur around here to make it worth wiled. I may set afew for coyote, just because I don`t like them.  >:(  Thought I was going to be trapping beaver, they have moved out of my streach of the creek.  ???

Catch dropped off in 3 areas today.Pulled those sets.Got a short loop south and west of the house that is holding up numberswise.Lee glad you had a good trip to ND.That country just recharges a guys batteries.I love it when the wind blows so hard the dirt leaving your sifter never hits the trap pattern. It feathers in ths set for 20 feet on the downwind side.Tkae care Bill

Bill you are soooo right about the dirt  going downwind from the sifter...lol... those praire dog  hills provide some nice  soft dirt and  lots of extra  material to make big trap bed pattern.
