308 Baer
« on: February 10, 2004, 03:52:52 PM »
I've recently read about a round called the 308 Baer and was wondering if any of you folks had any experience with it.  I understand it is a wildcat made by necking a 8mm Mag down to 30 cal.  This I've been told will push a 190 gr bullet to 3400 fps.  Now this sounds like a great bean field rifle for whitetails in Georgia.  Any information you guys may have will be appreciated.

Hi RT
The 308Baer is a great cartridge it is made by necking the 340wby mag down to 30cal, it is a popular round for 1000yd benchrest as well as hunting. The 308baer is usually a tight neck chamber and the necks have to be turned, and the cases have to be fireformed also dies are expensive. I have a 30' barrel 300wby that shoots the 190gr mk at 3200 and all I have to do is load them and shoot them and it is a great benchrest and hunting caliber. Unless you want to go through the effort of preparing brass and fire forming take a look at the 300wby,also the dies are standard for the 300wby. I don't know if 3400fps is possible with the 308baer with safe pressures and good case life maybe with a 34' or 36' barrel. A good longerange link is www.longrangehunting.com a lot of knowledge on the 308baer can be found there.
