First deer last night!
« on: November 05, 2012, 02:47:05 AM »
Just tried deer hunting for the first time last year but didn't connect.  Finally got a nice doe last night, and with my Contender.  10" 7-30 Waters with 120gn Nosler BT performed perfectly.  The shot was only about 25 yds, so I probably didn't need a 200 yd. capable gun and load, but you never know.  She ran about 50 yds. at the shot then tipped over before I could reload.

X-C-LENT. Haven't tried the handgun for deer -yet-. I doe have a 44mag Ruger Beisley that been sitting and itching to get used tho.
Archery season here at this time, Two Saturdays = two does so far. Nice nine point has been hanging around but hasn't made his fatal mistake yet.

I was pretty psyched to have everything work out.  Given the range I'm sure I could have shot it with my .357 S&W, but the 7-30 barrel was purchased specifically to shoot a deer with, so I kind of had to use it.  Didn't really put it to much of a test, I'm just butchering now and it's kind of interesting to look at the damage.  Bullet didn't hit anything hard all the way through, went between ribs on entry, made about a 2" hole through both lungs and through the big vessels on top of the heart, then cracked one rib on the way out leaving about a 2" exit.  Given the damage I'm surprised it made it as far as it did, but she ran right out in a plowed field in plain sight, so no tracking.

Good going.  Hunting with a handgun adds a whole new level of excitement.

First, congrats on the deer!! I carried a TC Contender off and on last year, had only one chance to use it. Buck fever set in, so I used my shotgun. Will try again this year.

As far as taking off with a big hole in her. Well my friend you will see how amazing these critters are. They can somehow squeeze out many yards after being hit with a good shot or even a car  ;)

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic, but all the important stuff is visible.  Everything is in the freezer now, so that was a bit of an adventure too.  I've dressed lots of small game/birds, but never a big critter.  Had to get on youtube a few times to figure out what was what.

Congrats on the first handgun kill. That's a nice doe. To me, taking one with a handgun is right up there with taking one with a bow. Gives you a great sense of satisfaction.

Congratulations and welcome to the club!

It's an accomplishment taking your first deer and doing so with a handgun is excellent! I shoot a 7-30 as well and love it. Managed to tag out with my 7-30 & my custom XP 100 this year.

Nice job Patrick!  My first contender was a 7-30 waters when I was stationed in SC.  Nothing allowed in Ohio but straight wall cartridges so its 45/44/41/357 for me here.   :-[    I don't think the deer care what caliber they're shot with.  They only care where they get shot.

Congrats, Patrick, on your first deer and to stay with deer hunting after getting skunked last year. The decision to do it with a handgun is very cool! Good luck on your future hunts!
