Ruger 10.5" 44 mag for hunting
« on: November 05, 2012, 03:48:23 AM »
Anybody tried the Ruger sillouette version of the SBH 44 mag for hunting?  Should give around 100 fps over the 7.5 inch, but I like the longer sight radius as well, especially with the One Hole ghost ring setup I have on it.  Should be able to squeeze out in excess of 1600 fps with a 240 grain bullet.

well from the few times I used my 7.5" sbh , it should do a great job IF you can do your part! That model IS a bit muzzle heavy for off hand shooting . It will do fantastic when supported on a fence post or tree branch though.

I have had one since 1986. I love it very accurate. I used to shoot over 150 rds a week through it on a slow week. As stated if you do your part it will definately do its.

You mean like this one?

A great tool for hunting. I actually use it for silhouette most of the year and when hunting season rolls around, I take it along some of the time. Deadly accurate and really puts the deer down.

Nice...I am amazed at how well my 10.5 balances.  It balances well enough that it does not really feel all that heavy to me.  None the less, I usually carry a monopod, so any excess barrel weight should not be a problem.  One reason I went with this, and a couple of TC Contenders, is the rugged terrain I hunt in and the fact that I am getting old enough to feel it.  It may be a little heavy for a handgun, but it is still way lighter than a rifle.

I just picked a used one up really affordable.  The balance and grip feels ok with the 10.5" barrel too.  Now for a scope?

I've been enamored with the 10.5 inch Super Blackhawk for quite some time. I've felt like it could fill a niche of a sort offering better velocity figures than a typical 4.62 or 5.5 while being somewhat more convenient to carry afield than say a 92 clone or Ruger 77/44 or really any 44 magnum carbine for that matter. Plus they are aesthetically pleasing as well. The first word that pops into my mind is "hogleg" when I see this pistol. I'd like to own one, but at the present it isn't exactly on my shortlist of things to acquire.

Had a Ruger 10.5in years ago. Set it up with a Burris 1.25x4 scope. I remember the load that was pulled from the Lyman manual well. It was components I had on hand and WOW , did it shoot! The load would be HOT now w/ same data! Old Hercules Unique - CCI 350 prmr-Hornady 240hp. This load won lots of "coffee" money @ local ranges ! ( I had a friend that watched rifle shooters & bet I could outshoot 'em @100 yrd.s) All good fun & surprising . Never got a deer with that gun , but killed many PA groundhogs. Wish I still had it.

Sounds great!  I have not taken mine hunting yet.  I have a contender super 14, 35 Rem that shoots bullseyes at 50 yards with Hornady Leverevolution ammo - don't even have to load for it.  That gun always tends to get my attention when I open the gun safe...None the less, I am looking forward to trekking way up the mountain with that Ruger before I get just too darn old to even make it up there.  Sweet gun just to look at.

Had both back in the 80's, a couple of 7.5" and a 10.5" bull (not called a silhouette).    And I took both mule deer hunting in the Rockies 3-4 years.    7.5's were fine, took deer to around 125 yards with them...the 10.5 was a RPITA to carry in a bandoleer so it was only carried once and sold soon after.   The Smith 8 3/8" was a lot easier to pack, or a Smith 19 6".   A sling would have been a better choice for the SBH 10.5".    My favorite "Ruger" carry was an old model Blackhawk 4 5/8" 357MAG - killed deer with it almost as far and a lot nicer to carry.   But my all time favorite SA carry for deer was still the old Herter's 401 Power Mag I bought new in the 60's to hunt wild boar with.

Picture is my young son shooting the SBH 10.5" bull for the first time and he handled it just fine.   But then he had been shooting my lessor centerfire irons 3-4 years by then, had his own Bearcat, Contender with several barrels, a few rifles up to 243Win, a shotgun and archery equipment.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Plan on carrying the 10.5 in a shoulder harness.  Feels fine just to wear around the house.  The proof will be in the field carry...

guns-o-fun,
What type of shoulder harness are you going to be using?

Just an Uncle Mike's "self-adjusting", worn on the off side.

Are not all the 10.5" SBHs the same?  I see the terms bull barrel and silhouette used. I looked at the Ruger site and Blue or Stainless are the only choices. Am I missing something ?   thanks

Early on they made one with a slender barrel.  They are somewhat scarce.

Slick rig, White Eagle.  Who did the muzzle brake?
