Iron sights on barrel, but none on the back end / flattop
« on: November 07, 2012, 07:11:29 AM »
I used to have an AR15 carry handle model. I sold it and am looking to get a flat top model for better optic mounting options. My question is this: Why are some AR's flat top with a front sight on the barrel but none in back? Wouldnt that get in the way of optics?

Do they keep the front sight installed so a guy can mount a rear iron sight to the rail?
Thanks

its fairly common to have iron sights on an AR with an optic also attached.  the key is to have the optic high enough to see over the front sight.  plus, in a pinch, if your batteries die, your front sight is still there to use

Its all personal preference.  With no magnification, the red dot/iron sight co-witness is pretty popular.  If you use a standard riser block and a magnified rifle scope, you don't even see the front sight, but you can still slap the carry handle back on just in case.

My current settup on my AR now has a scope on medium hight scope rings and with the 3-9 power on the scope you cant even see the front sight....

I added a Matech flip up rear sight to my rifle - this is a military issued rear sight for a flat top - adjustable for windage and elevation to 600 yards.  The post of the sight has a detent  - it folds down out of the way when not in use.

They also have a little higher scope mounts where you can have the iron sights in the bottom 1/3 of the non magnified scope picture. I like them with no stock front sight mounted and just put a flip up sight on the front and back. The big stock style sight is said to not impair a high magnification scope at all by folks on here that know a lot more about them than me. My problem with them is if you mount a light on the fore arm or have night vision with an IR light it sure does impede the heck out of your ability to see at night. The big stock sights reflect enough light back at you to make it harder to see than without it. The little flip up sights are usually lower profile and reflect less light back at you if you have them up. And really don't reflect anything back to speak of if they are down.
