.244 krag?
« on: November 07, 2012, 12:17:47 PM »
anyone heard of this round? I bought the form/trim die and fl sizer and seater die. going to get some 30-40 case to try the dies. what problems should i look for? if i can figure out the dies i may have a reamer cut to match and chamber a barrel for it. hoping the dimensions will work on a .243 win barrel. any help?

The base diameter on a .243 Win is .010 to .015 larger than the 30-40 so would not work as a rechamber. If your talking a bolt gun than it may be possible to have  the barrel shank shortened and rethreaded but would be costly if not doing it yourself.
 Good luck !     Jedman

damn, so .243 is out. in a handi that would mean re boreing a smaller chambering to get to where i need to be? or stubbing the .243 back into itself? probably going to get costly. well, maybe i will just play with dies learning how to use forming die. still would be fun to have an oddball caliber few people have ever heard of.

If you want to use a 243 handi barrel as your platform and want a big rimmed 6 mm wildcat.   You could ream the chamber to  6MM Remington Improved or 6 MM AI add a rim cut and form your brass using 7 X 57 R brass.
The full length size die in 6 mm improved should neck down the 7 x 57 R in one easy pass then you would need to fire form it in the gun , once fireformed make sure you dont push the sholder back anymore than needed to close the gun easy on a sized case.
I think someone has already just formed 307 Win brass with a 243 size die and shot it as a 243 rimmed that would be the easiest route.

jedman i have this set of dies and a form die for .244 krag/ 6mm krag. i got them to learn how to use the form die and liked the idea of an oddball caliber. a couple of guys suggested a green mountain blank and stubbing it to a shotgun barrel. Im not a machinist and would have to find someone to do it. i may just play with the dies and then let this project go. building a rifle for it may be too expensive with stub work and needing a custom chamber reamer.

the gentleman i purchased the dies from was kind enough to send me three formed cases. i bought 20 30-40 cases from midway to attempt the forming process. this round is pretty cool. the shoulders are kind of rounded even after going through the sizing die. kinda like a weatherby. without a rifle chamber to fire form this is as far as i can go. anyone know a ballpark figure for costs of a stub project and a custom chamber job? im sure this will have to wait till the kids are out of highschool or even college before i can fully fund this one.  :'(  I have 22rf and .223 rem. but then my rifle calibers jump up to .284, .308, and .45-70. never had a .243 or .257 or 6.5. thought this wierd .243 might fit in nicely. i had hoped to use a .243 win barrel but that will not work. what about reboring a .223? better or less expensive than stubbing a 6mm blank?

Ackley did the 6mm Krag Improved then 6mm Krag Short Ackley off the  30-40 krag case.  As to the 6/30-40 Krag it has no known loading data but dies etc were made http://www.midwayusa.com/find?&newcategorydimensionid=12373.

You might call RCBS find out about reamer print for those dies or check with some like Manson and others if they have reamer print.

As to cost that vary by gunsmith plus reamer/gauges cost.  Myself doing these kind of project shouldn't be cutting barrel cost as that may be the cheapest part of building that type rifle.

I bought three new books for 60 dollars to get one usefull page of info! the .243 R.K.B. is very very close to what i have. i just can't find any more info on it. the 6mm krag short ackley is not as close. hoping to find someone on here that has heard of it.
