Reminton 1100 bolt sticks open
« on: November 08, 2012, 09:00:59 AM »

I've got a personal Remington 1100 that I have just finished a complete disassembly, duracoat, and reassembly with a new speedfeed stock. It looks great, but…

The problem I'm having is that when the trigger group is installed the bolt gets bound-up (stuck, not a 'lock') to the rear, and it has to be bumped to get it to come forward about a 1/4" and contact the bolt latch. When the release is pushed then whatever was binding the bolt is apparently clear, and with the carrier up the bolt doesn’t bind at all.  Upon live firing it ejects the spent round and feeds only one onto the carrier, but the bolt is held back and you have to hit the release to get it chambered, then the same thing again. It doesn’t seem to be staying bound to the rear under fire, recoil shakes it free and it comes to rest on the bolt latch.  Also the bolt moves freely with the trigger group removed, all the way back till it bottoms out then right back closed, can’t be the recoil system (plus I just took it all apart and cleaned it, it’s nice in there).  I think it may be something to do with the carrier dog, but don’t know what to do about it, it doesn’t appear damaged.

I took the trigger group completely apart; including the riveted parts (it was disgusting and somewhat rusty). Cleaned and duracoated all carbon steel parts and cleaned and polished all s/s parts, all looked good with no pitting and no worn corners. I was able to get all the rivets apart with no damage and with enough left to re-squeeze them to secure.  I used this guide to help with the order of removal, http://www.remingtonsociety.com/images/Rem_1100_Notes__Rev_with_Pix_of_Disassembly.pdf.  I paid close attention to the small parts and springs and such, and am sure it is back together correctly, however it doesn’t work, so.....

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks

Maybe remove the spring that goes into the stock and check the H-shape piece that the rails push back.  I had this piece bend on me once and a rail would bind about where you are having trouble in your cycle.  You'll need to remove the butt plate or recoil pad and use a deep socket to unscrew the nut to get inside.

Just a guess.  Not a gunsmith but have had an 1100 since the 70's.

Did you duracoat a part that may be causing it to hang up.  I've had guns not cycle well after using duracoat.  I try not to paint moving parts if possible.  Did you paint the magazine tube?  Your problem could be on that end as well.

Another possibility is that while removing/replacing the rivets you crushed or over tightened the parts while reusing the shortened rivets..

I figured it out, I had the carrier latch follower and the carrier dog follower switched.  The latch follower is just a little longer than the dog follower, and was causing the dog to bind up against the carrier.  Once switched it runs great.  Thanks all!!
