NEF 17 HM2
« on: November 09, 2012, 02:57:51 PM »
I've never wanted the 17 HMR.  I always thought my .22 WMR was a better cartridge.  However, I thought the HM2 was an upgrade to the .22 LR as a small game cartridge when it came out.

Today I happened to be in a store that had an NEF 17 HM2.  I gave it a look and thought it was a nice rifle.  If I told you the price, I would be getting messages questioning my intelligence for not buying it right then.  I simply wanted to think about it.

All that to get to these questions.  For those of you with one of these rifles, would you buy it again?  Are you having problems finding ammo now?  And for the purposes of small game and target shooting would you prefer the HM2 or the HMR?

After posting this thread and dwelling about it on the deer stand this morning I went to the shop to buy the rifle.  They had two of them NIB.  With a little negotiating I walked out with both of them for $90.00 apiece.  They had two boxes of Hornady ammo which I also bought.  Looking forward to getting one scoped up and testing it.

Hopefully my two new grandsons will enjoy shooting it in the years to come.

When I bought mine new (in 2005 I think?) it was $130, so that's a good price, congrats!  ;)

Tim,
They both had an original price tag on them of $139.95 so that's in the range of yours.  I checked the serial number of one.  It has a two letter prefix NU which makes it a 2004 model.  I don't know what the second one has, I'll make a point of checking.  It's hard to believe these guns could have sat in a warehouse or on a dealer shelf for 8 years.

I have bought two, I would buy another in a second!!

Like Tim, I have had mine since they origionally offered them and paid $129 for the first one and $99 for the second (used) a short time later.  GREAT ACCURATE RIFLES!! Personally, I don't care what they "overlap", Accurate rifles are interinsing and truly accurate rifles extraodenary!! These are truely extraodenary!!!  ::) ;) :)

GO BUY IT!!! You will not regret it!

Mine is getting new glass this week... they I have to go site it in.. OH DARN. ;)

Great little pea shooters.Buy all the ammo you can find as I've heard Eley has quit making it.Eley by far shoots the best in my sportster.I have on hand over 6000 rounds and would buy more if I can find it.

My stores All seem to have it, but for about the last year I make a habit of buying 2 boxes every trip in a store that sells it. I do see Natchez has some on sale listed as clearance this month. Maybe I'll grab another brick.

I have t been able to find Eley but the CCI shoots fine.

Up date on my purchase.  I mounted a B&L 2x7 Elite on it.  Today I was able to get to the range with it.  Using Hornady ammo I was able to get sub inch groups at 100 yards.  When the wind started gusting in the afternoon that became harder to do.  I'm pleased with the new gun and am looking forward to experimenting to see how much better I'll be able to shoot it.  Hopefully I'll be able to find a couple of brands of ammo to see what shoots the best.  Right now Hornady seems the most plentiful.   I know right now it's a hell of a squirrel and rabbit rifle.  Very glad I picked it up.

Robert.

Mine shoots both the CCI and Hornady as well as the other. I have still yet to shoot any ELEY...

Mine got a new scope yesterday. a 4x12 Simmons from my 22Maggie. The Maggie got a brand new Simmons 6x18x40 side focus.
I am VERY IMPRESSED with this scope!!!

Its crystal clear right to the edge, ZERO flair and ZERO tube effect that so common on cheap scopes. Its got a TON of eye relief. I had to mount it a full inch forward form the other Simmons. I am VERY seriously considering ordering a second and selling the 4x12!!!

All for 80$!
