Where are you getting your cast bullets to hunt with? I have not yet gotten into casting and am looking for some reasonably prices wide meplat bullets around 250-300gr

Montana bullet works is a good one. They have a website but you order by phone. Beartooth bullets is also good but sometimes are months behind.

thanks countryrebel. Well since I am not getting very many hits on this then what mold do u like that is reasonable priced? I guess I may have to start casting.

I use the tumble lube design that drops about 220 grains from MY alloy. I have an NEI 2 cavity that drops a 245 grain SWC with gas check, that I use for hunting. Recoil gets punishing as bullet weight rises, so I stick with these weights. Those Lee 6 holers really produce a pile of bullets in a hurry!

I don't cast, and I get mine from Montana bullet works also. Turn around has always been fairly quick, and quality seems good to me.

I use Lazer Cast hardcast without gas checks for reduced practice loads, and Cast Performance with gas checks for hunting.
I have somewhere around 400 250 gr. Lazer Cast, and at least 100 .44 mag cases I need to sell. .44 has been replaced with a .454 Casull.

Montana Bullet works has great bullets, been using them for many years now. From deer to hogs and black bear. Price is great as well.

I've had success with some of the more modest priced commercial casting companies. Missouri Bullet, Mastercast and Dardas Cast Bullets to name a few.

Best thing is you can shoot your deer / bear load all year long and be very familiar with it when big game season rolls around.

For near max loads, I prefer Beatooth Bullets or Cast Performance with wide meplats and gas checks sized to .432.

I have killed deer with the plain old Oregon Trail 240 Lasercast SWC bullets available almost everywhere. I never had a bad experience with them.

I have heard very good things about the Bear Creek but have not personally used them yet

I use the RCBS 44-250-K (very close to the "original design" Keith style bullet) from them. Very good bullets and very accurate in my Bisley. I have pushed them close to 1500 fps with no leading problems.

I get my 444 Marlin slugs from Beartooth Bullets, my 200 gn Keith style swc 38/357 slugs from Colorado Custom Cast Bullets, 295-300 gn Keith style 44 spl/mag slugs from the same place and my 240 gn Keith style swc 45 slugs from my brother in law (great guy).

I'm guessing this was directed at me.

The original design was of course the Ideal #429421 which was designed by Elmer Keith and later became the Lyman #429421. At some point, some brilliant soul at Lyman changed the design of the mould. The original featured a deep, square bottomed lube groove that would hold a good supply of lube and a deep crimp groove with a long sloping lead in for a secure crimp. For whatever reason, these were changed to a shallow, round bottom lube groove and a shallow square profile crimp groove. No less than Uncle Elmer himself raised a major ruckus over these changes. Lyman changed the design again, but it wasn't quite the same as the original.

RCBS had a 245 grain SWC mould that was highly regarded, but decided to go back to the drawing board and make a mould that was closer to Elmer's original design. The 44-250-K was the result. Many highly regarded shooters who have firsthand experience with the original Ideal moulds have declared the RCBS a very, very close match to it. I have no experience with the originals, but I can tell you that the 44-250-K shot exceptionally well in several .44 caliber guns I have tried it in.

As have the Lyman 429421s in several ov mine??? Seems every mold maker has his opinion of what Elmer designed. Verbal Smith offers his as original design?
