8pt on Saturday... yippee.
« on: November 11, 2012, 02:26:39 AM »
Went Saturday AM to some public land I know. It's shrinking as developements encroach, but still some great land.

In the tree right at dawn, up HIGH - about 40 feet. It's a great time of the year - some leaves down but not all. Beautiful. Saw nothing until about 9, when nice-looking buck walking along the creek showed up. He was traveling, fast walk - grunt - he stopped - crosshairs at juncture of neck & body & squeezed at about sixty yards... perfect. None of that unseemly running off and making me follow bloodtrail... deer when four feet, straight down. 30-30 does its job every time, if I do mine...

Took deer home, daughter assisted - well, she observed & gave commentary...

Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

Nice buck and good job.  When my kids were growing up I had their mom take a pic of the kids, me and the deer each year.  Put the pics in a scrap book so that when I pass on they would have something to look at, think about the memories etc...Looks like you have a great pic to start with if you haven't already.

there was a first with this deer - I recovered bullet. I always get a pass through, but hitting neck/shoulder... caught some neck bone, and found the jacket of the bullet up against scapula on the offside. Core was scattered though neck with pieces of  bone.

Hey Streak– load was a Hornady leverevolution, 160gr. They work just fine. Truth is I don’t really need them – I NEVER get a shot past 200 yards, vast majority are well under 100 – but they’re easier to load, they group well with my rifle, and they kill the deer. The idea of making my 30-30 a 250 yard rifle appeals, though I’m not sure I’ve got any business taking a shot that far. Got a couple boxes on sale at Dick’s. I was at the range last week checking zero – we’re got a nice county range, indoor with 100m line and nice benches – and fact is, Winchester 150gr PP groups just as well, kills deer just as well. 336 may not be a great benchrest rifle, but it is a wonderful deer rifle.
If you haven’t and get opportunity, take that neck/juncture of body shot – much better than behind-the-shoulder lungs!

GOOD JOB YT!

yeah the low neck works!  I shot a buck yesterday through the lungs at a downward angle and he was hunched up but trotting off slowly... rather than wait and see if I'd get one shot/one kill glorification, I necked him.  that was a dramatic flip-flop and done.  I think that's my new prefered method... no bs, no tracking, no blood trail but a good splash where it was standing.  turns out after autopsy he was done from the first, but I'm glad he didn't make it to the thick thornbrush he was heading to before he died, that wouldn't have been a fun uphill drag.  I'm starting to think shooting them a second time if not DRT is prudent too.

cute kid, looks ready to stop touching corpse and start touching rifle... the age here to start is 5.  your locale?

Only happened to me once previously.. 1st day of season, first 5 minutes..  spike buck to fill my "antlerless" tag.
Nice , big body however..would have looked better if I had hung it higher...but you get the idea.  Shot him up behind my friend's gravel pit, where there  are  cornfields punctuated by woods. WW 150  gr power point, 100yds,  quartering away;  in behind  last rib ,out  front of chest..trotted about 30 yards before he flopped..

Theres a story behind that..  I shot him just about 1&1/2 miles from my house, and I had to get the blood washed out, so I came home and pulled a hand forged hook from my blacksmith shop and hooked it through his lower jaw to string him up.
That hook was originally made for a halloween costume, where the fellow using it, pulled his coat sleeve down over his fist and played a pirate..AARGH !!
Shortly after the photo, I took the deer down to my buddy for processing....

BTW: This young buck was in fine condition, since the place where I shot him is one of 3 small woods of 8-10 acres each, surrounded and intersperced by a couple hundred acres of corn & soybean fields.

Yes, the RA worked just fine,,,very pleased with it...now I will grab my CVA Scout .44 mag and go more into the woods for some horns as well.  Actually, most deer around here should be in great eating condition, since woods cover the hills and a good share of the bottom land has either corn or soybeans...mostly harvested over the past 3-4 weeks, but still plenty left in corners along with missed & dropped grain.
My 2nd cousin for instance has locally, about 6,000 acres dedicated to such cash crops..
