sidekick youth model takes more deer
« on: November 11, 2012, 07:06:20 AM »
He got 2 does in early ML season, this weekend was youth.
My 10 y.o. sat Sat morning and evening seeing nothing, Sun morning we saw this 8 pointer headed away about 120 yards out, "doe bleated" him in to about 80 yards and the boy took the only shot he had, a heavy 1/4ing towards neck shot, dropped in the tracks.
Sidekick cut to 20", boyds TH stock with 1.5" cut off, Home Depot Knee pad cheeck pad, Bushnell slug scope 2-7.

Swamp bottom where it dropped

Big brother giving him the "fist bump"

Congratulations to that young man!

What bullet, powder, and primer did he use?

All bullets are from prbullet.com
Powder is BH209 with the "aftermarket 209" breach plug.
For range work (with the 10 year old) he shoots 65gr BH209 with a 175gr deadcenter bullet.
For hunting he shoots a 250gr extreme elite on 85gr BH209  ( http://www.prbullet.com/ee.htm )
I find these 2 loads hit the same spot at 100 yds.
In the end, any bullet properly placed will kill a whitetail,, But hunting with youth you never know how well it's placed. I shot a 300gr keithnose from PRbullet for a few years, all the energy is displaced in the body, no pass through, and because of the steep angles we shoot (high stand), no blood trail.
The areas we hunt are thick, a double lunged deer can run 100yards and it is lost,, I switched to the extreme elites and get ok expansion and pass through, works best for our situation.
