Firing Pin size, SB1 vrs. SB2
« on: November 11, 2012, 07:33:51 AM »
A recent discussion with another member has brought a question.

I know there is a Rifle/CF size firing pin and a larger Shotshell size firing pin.

I had always presumed the primary difference was SB1 had larger and SB2 had smaller, my frames are all 10yrs or older and that is the case at least with mine.

Where there SB1 frames with the smaller Rifle pin and frame pin hole?
Maybe in the case of the older factory mounted 30-30,,
Or,
SB2 frames with larger Shotshell pins an hole,,Like the factory 10ga frame?
found elsewhere

Unfortuneately, its not quite so blk and white as that... :)

YES, There are some SB1 frames with rifle sized pins an holes.

Before the SB designation, (Pre 1987) there was 158 & 258 frames. These are stronger then SB1 but not up to SB2, BUT when they existed, H&R did not have any hi intensity chamberings. 45/70. 30-30 357 and 44 Mags and at the end 357 Maxi's too.

The USH shotguns have a hybrid frame shot gun pin and SB2 stregnth, (OR almost)

Before they decided to put the 357 and 44 Mags on the SB1, You would be pretty much correct, the SB1 was a shotgun frame and SB2 a Rifle. Not anymore...  ;)

I have a 1972 vintage frame that has a case hardened finish and is cast iron with a rifle sized hole and firing pin. I presently have a 44 magnum barrel married up to it and it does not have any problems with pierced primers.
