I took some vacation time starting Wednedsay to soley focus on getting my buck tag filled with my bow and to help my youngest son fill his first archery tag with his recurve. Make a long couple of stories short I filled my tag first morning out by arrowing a very nice 11 pointer. I was using a new mech boradhead from Wally World which failed to deploy fully. However, the shot turned out to be true and after searching several hours was able to locate my buck. I did not have time to get pictures by the time my dad and uncle showed up to help with the buck, but I did get some pictures of the rack, which rest in the freezer waiting for the trip to the taxidermist. I had to drive 40 miles to pick my son up from college and get back out for the evening hunt.
We have been trying to various methods to get in close (under 10 yards) so he can take a whitetail with his recurve. We decided that I would get up in a tree stand since I still have a doe tag and he would find a good ambush spot along a trail within site of me. We have worked out some hand signals if I see anything coming so he can get ready. We tried Wednesday, and had some deer move through, but they spotted him at the last moment and he could not get a shot. They were 2 yrds from him. Friday had some deer move through, but again they picked him off when he tried to shift weight for the draw. Saturday, we had one lone deer move through, but this time he let it walk a little farther past him before he made his move and scored! Shot was low and it turned out to be a gut shot. So we tracked it into a known bedding area and backed out. Went back this morning before he had to head for work and located his deer. A little button buck. Had we known it was a BB we probably would have let it walk, but neither one of use saw the nubbins until we found it this morning. He has pics, but they are on hsi cell and he is at work paying his way through college.
Good Luck to all and be safe.
