30-06 accelerators

i don't know if this is the right forum for this. does anyone remember the remington accelerators? they were sabots and a 55 grain bullet. my dad killed many a groundhogs with these. did anyone else use these with good luck? i also remember him taking a few deer with them. one in particular dropped in it's tracks. that was the fastest bullet out of the muzzle at the time.

I had a friend who tried them in his 30-06 for coyotes......not happy with the accuracy.

my avatar pic is my 1960 Rambler I bought in 1972 for $175..6 banger 3-on-the-tree...drove it for 5 yrs  22mpg.. was "hot-rodding" (LOL) one night...tore out 1st/reverse gear. Drove it that way for 2 yrs(with no reverse and only 2nd and high)  Had to really plan ahead when parking.

Back in the 70's I owned a Remington pump 30-06 and bought 2 boxes of the Accelerator rounds. They shot really well ( 1" groups @ 100 yds.). I killed one coyote with them (1 shot at about 50 to 75 yds.). Put the rest of the rounds on the shelf and still have them.

I tried them back in the 70s.  Very disappointed with the results.  Tried them in my Remington Pump 30-06, TCR 30-06, and a Ruger bolt 30-06.  Finally just shot up the remaining bunch just to reload the brass.  Accuracy was so bad I refused to try and kill something with them.  People have tried to give me partial boxes since just to get rid of them.  I take them just for the brass.  I have a box of 30-30 and a box of .308 sitting on the shelf in my garage.  I'll never shoot them, just keeping them as curios.

I never used the factory rounds, but have the components on hand to load your own. Accuracy with them seems to depend a good deal on the condition of the throat of the rifle, and how clean the barrel is. Also matching the weight of the bullet to the twist in the rifle, and not trying to drive them to fast. They also won't turn in the accuracy you can get from a 223 or 22-250, but making 2-3 moa isn't a real hard thing to do.

I had acouple of friends that tried them. One of them loaded them for 06 and 308. Both said that they got good accuracy out to abt. 75 yrds. but after that they they opened up fast. Hitting a groundhog at 125 yrds. way a 50-50 propation due to accuracy. If your wanting a good varmint bullet for 30 cal. try the 130 gr. Speer HP. They are the lltest buller I ever found that would hold their accuracy out to 400 yrds. They are no good for hide hunter though as they bolw some very large holes in hides.

this feller i knew put some in a loaner
gun and got it jammed so tight i liked
to have never got it undone. knocked
it out with a brass rod, but had to hit it
way harder than i was comfortable with.
took a few years off my life i'm thinking.

I've shot just a few in my Model 70 30.06.  They didn't group well.
