Do you know why the power outages in NY have been so long?
« on: November 15, 2012, 06:39:01 AM »
I haven't been following the Sandy aftermath, but it does seem like power has been out for a while in some places that I would have expected to be back online by now. Do you happen to know why it's taking so long?

Here in Va.ith so many fewer customers and power lines I have gone as long as 14 days with out power . I really don't see there power outage as excessive considering the number of customers involved . Note one thing  when an emergency is declared all maintance is suplimented  by federal funds so alot of extras are done as power is restored  I believe it can go on for 6 mos. to a year.  ;)
and often parts have to be shipped in or sometimes made.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Thanks. I forgot about the parts needing to be made. For example, some transformers are only made by one company in the world and the lead time is six months to a year, so it really can take a long time to replace a particular component.

Keep in mind that when utility workers were turned away and sent home, the supplies that they brought with them went home too!  It's not just transformers, consider also poles snapped off, wires ripped up, etc.  The list is too long to post here.

A lot of the power stations for larger buildings are in the basement.....got flooded...massive repairs.  As was stated, they sent the help and extra parts home because some of the volunteers were non union.
When Opal came through Georgia some years ago, we were without power for 2 weeks.  There was massive damage.
I guess it show how dependent we are on things that a century ago we could easily do without.  Can't even run a cash register without not only power but internet hookup nowadays.

On overhead lines, you can blow and go once the rain and wind stops; cut it down, pile it up, put up new stuff.

Like Ben said, working in underground vaults is slow.

Probably have to replace a lot of wire which is slow also.
But first you have to dry out the conduit.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Bommer what workers were tuned away? FP&L workers (approx. 2,000) returned yesterday from the N.E. The utilitys up there didn't have any more work for them to do. And remember that a lot of people don't need  power. Thay don't have a house any more. Utilitys make money from customers that are paying bills if they are not connected they don't pay. The Gov of N.Y. wonts for all of us to pay 30,000,000,000 US to fix the state of N.Y. and improve their utilitys. let the customers that use the utility pay for any up grades and repair. I am a FP&L customer and in the last 20 years we payed for a lot more than the damage in the N.E. Don't cry and rase rates.

CLUM SUM. They turned away crews from Alanbama and N Mexico because they weren't union. A guy I know said his daughter lives up there and that they finally got some union guys from Ohio. POWDERMAN.  ::) ::)

Seems the news mentioned that electricians have to certify that the home is OK before sthe power is turned back on.  Lots of older homes will have issues that have to be addressed, even without considering the affect of salt water.

I guess that is why they call them disasters instead of inconveniences.

The rumors of non-union crews being turned away were just that rumors. When those crews showed up in NJ they already had enough help because most of the help was coming from the west and south. Those crews were sent on to NY. No company would send crews that they were not going to get payed for. They don't do storm work for free or out of the goodness of their hearts. I have a bad taste in my mouth from most trade unions, however; utility unions have better things to do than the B.S. that most others have time for. The companies in NJ and NY would never refuse help from any legitimate company, because they are held accountable for service outages by law!

Not true Sir, don't know where you heard that but your information is wrong. There have been reports right here from folks with personal knowledge of crews being rejected. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

It is true.  I trained the guy who is in charge of the Decatur utilities.  He was on local TV explaining it.  I had something to do with paperwork involving who did what type job.  Union workers can only do their job, not help with someone elses.  The Alabama crews didn't want to be tied down with all the you do this, but you can't do that rules since they weren't union.

Also on the Gulf coast lots of times power is out for weeks after a hurricane.  Most people along the Gulf are not all-electric, have emergency generators or other alternative fuel.  Most have propane or natural gas for cooking, water heating, etc.  When the power goes out, they can still function, and a small generator can keep their refrigerators and freezers going.  Some have firewood as an alteranative fuel also.  Not many generating facilities in basements either.

Well, southerners do not like unions.  They refused to sign to be affiliated.  This should never have been an issue period.  Why would they ask to sign some union paper to be "affiliated".  You either work or you don't.   Problem is the unions would have told the workers what they could and couldn't do.  They didn't want that.  However like I said, sheeple don't prepare for anything.  No portable generators.  No buying fuel before it hit.  No buying food and water before it hit.  No prepartation.  Just wanted some government agency to take care of them.

I'am born and raise in the South and I am UNION  this and all the other storys about workers turned a way  is  crap. I worked for FP&L for forty years and never in that time was any help turned down for storm work union or not. Most people that belive these stories herd them from someone who herd it from a x wife, uncle, coworker ,pothead, homeless person at the intersetion at the interstate or other sources.

For anybody to offer emergency help and be told, OK, you can help us but ONLY on our terms is ridiculous. Nix on the unions. A friend has a daughter in nj and she told the story about Ala crews going back home when refused access to the affected areas without conditions. She said they got a UNION crew a week later from Ohio. Fact is that folks suffered and did without because of the union. Shame on em, and the govts for putting up with it. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

Okay, I'm a Tennessean.....I've got a story from NY that says one thing and a story from Alabama that says another.

Which one do you think I'm going to believe?

Hint......carpetbaggers......reconstruction.....need more hints?

They are providing a service. It tells the rest of us where not to live. If you want to live in a place like NJ or NYC, then there are consequences and no amount of belly aching is going to change things except leaving for another place.

.
I think you should believe the article above from The Huntsville Times, from a reporter who followed the issue right along, and not follow reality spinners wanting you to believe something that didn't exactly happen, or third words from a 'friend of a daughter in NJ".
.
Believe me in NJ and NY there was more than enough work to go around--so much that ground control had to organize how to go about tackling it all. If the NJ 'union' was taking on some of the mangement directionship than so be it. But the story bashing unions is pure BS from the anti-union minions.
.
My guess in the Alabama crew there was some good ole boys very steeped in anti-union rhetoric and mythology, and when somebody wanted to direct them usefully, and it it was a union guy, their imaginations ran wild and good ole blaming the unions BS came out.  We see the same crap in these forums all the time.
.
...TM7

Doubt that , when you consider the bucks these guys make working an emg. they would take direction from about anyone. Most likely it will be found out equipment replacement was the problem . Getting some of the old stuff may be near impossible .

The reason that the power is off in most of NY has nothing to do with the grid anymore. They have most of that back up. The power has not been returned to individuals because they need to replace all wire, outlets, and breakers that became flooded with sea water. Until they get that stuff replaces they get a temporary pole in the front yard. As for believing one story over another check the facts there is no room for belief in such matters. Again there is no company that will send crews and equipment across the country with out it being payed for. So unless you are seeing it happen it is better to follow that whole " is it better to remain silent and have others assume you are a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Two stories. Which one do we believe? I think all one needs to do is look at the character of unions, what they are, and what they do. That alone tells me which story I believe. Add to the fact that the media is always hell bent on protecting union interests. It doesn't take to much guessing in which story is true.

Well, i was in NYS when Sandy hit, i have friends who was in Sandys path.  One of them told me, the trucks came from the south to help and had a problems with the unions in NJ, the workers left in their trucks BUT didn't go home.  They just moved to a different area and went to work.

I believe what i was told, cause my friend was there!

The  workers  that returned to Al got to Va and were told that the place in NJ that they were to go to did not need them. There was too many workers at this place and they could go some where else, they got confused and went home. This was reported on FOX and confirmed by the head of the company tha sent them to NJ. Facts are facts and some people  are just to  obstinate to see the truth People tht hate Unions should go live where there has been no Unions. It would be nice to work for a dollar an hr. and have no safty rules , oh yes lets move to Bangladesh then the big bad Unions wouldn't mess with our independence.

Union textile mills in the south in my area were the first to close and move overseas starting in the late 1980's.  Non union didn't close and move until 4-5 years ago.  The south is not Bengladesh.  Unions in bad economic times can break companies, especially small ones.  Unions were ok in the late 1800's getting working conditions better.  After the government stepped in and made laws regarding child labor, 40 hour work week, safe working conditions, etc, unions were no longer necessary.

You know, the south's wages might be lower, but the cost of living is also lower.  Our power, gasoline, natural gas, and other utilities are lower.  Our homes cost less.  Land costs less to buy.  I have a 2,800 sq ft home with swimming pool that cost me $225,000.  Can't buy that up north.  My property taxes are about the same as my stepson in Illinois, and he only has 1,500 sq ft.  My state taxes are lower.  Food costs are lower since we have a longer growing season.  We have peaches, watermellons, pecans, peanuts, grapes, apples, plums, pears, all grown here so prices on a lot fo produce is less.  We grow green veggies like trunips, collards, spinich, broccoli, in the winter.  We have southern pine trees for lumber.  I've lived up north.  My wife is from Wisconsin.  She never wants to go back.  Prices are much higher on a lot of goods up there.  Don't condem lower wages, when to maintain a good standard of living, you can get by with less.  That is why we see so much corruption in the welfare system here.  If people here get the same amount as people up north, they are much better off here, the money goes further.  That is why you see people well dressed, driving nice cars buy their food with food stamps or a food stamp card.
