.308 Armalite,DPMS, or RRA?
« on: November 15, 2012, 09:56:24 AM »
This rifle will mainly be for bench shooting and a MBR if ever needed. I might use it for deer or coyote hunting but I dont plan on walking with it that much. Right now 1500.00 Is my budget for the rifle alone. I still need a scope and mounts yet.

With that being said I have also found this information

http://gunwiki.net/Gunwiki/Ref308ARs

It's a break down of the manufactures, what system they are using, and what mag's they use.

Right now with the information I have read from thehighroad and other websites I am really leaning toward going with the the Armalite platform. Seems as most people say they are better quality compared to the DPMS as far as the fit and finish is concerned. I have never personally been able to handle a armalite. I have also never heard anything bad about the DPMS platform either but people that have owned both say the armalite is nicer. I have also read nothing bad about the RRA either accept the use a different thread/barrel nut on their rifles making it harder to find after market barrels unless purchased from them.

What platform and model of the AR10 style rifle would you choose and why? Also what platform has better quality and more reliable mags?

I am in the same boat and am leaning towards the SIG 308 AR10.  Like their gas system and Sig quality.

I'm an AR-10 noob, and am interested in purchasing an Armalite as well. The mags are a bit spendy( the Gen II), but reasonable if you buy a pack of 10 or so off of armalites site. The DPMS is a fine rifle from what I've read, and uses the cheaper Magpul Mags. All in all the AR 10 has its faults, but I'll take it for what it is.

Availability of parts:  DPMS wins.
Quality of magazines:  DPMS wins with MagPul products.

I've built two 308 AR's on the DPMS pattern thus far.  Both using TM10 lowers.  Fit and finish are perfectly acceptable.  I used DPMS brand uppers.

Not an expert at all in the .308 field.  Have heard DPMS is fantastic.  I very recently shot with a buddy who had the RR and it was just awesome to shoot.  I don't think you would be disappointed with whatever you decide.  You may ended up having to go with whatever is less of a waiting time.  I don't see many having those in stock right now.

DPMS uses Magpul magazines.  I think Armalite has gone to these type magazines also.  Rock River once used FAL magazines.  I've seen the DPMS at Acadamy Sports, a local gun store, and Gander Mountain for around $1,200-1,300.  That leaves money for scopes or other accessories.  I've also heard some say they got 1/2 moa out of the box.  They seem to be a little front heavy with the colapsible stock.  Standard AR stocks seem to be more balanced.  I also think they are all eventually going to use the Magpul type magazines.  Several companies have adapted it.  I have an AR-15 DPMS and I like it.  No problems so far.  DPMS/Remington also make uppers for 243, 260 Rem, 7mm08, 308, and 338 Federal.  So you get a lot of options if you want to go that route.  Someone will eventually make it in a 358 also, from what I have read.  All of these cartridges use the same magazines, so that won't be a problem, like some calibers for the AR which require different magazines or magazine feeds.

I forget who did it, but a few years back the RSAUM .300 was offered. The WSM 300 has lighter brass and is more prone to case head separation. They made the RSAUM 300 as a regular run so it was not a special order. Unfortunately RSAUM is a rather unwieldy acronym. I think Remington Short Action Magnum would have been better; RSAM rolls better than RSAUM.
