Casting your own sabots?
« on: November 16, 2012, 08:52:16 AM »
Hello All,

New to the muzzleloading game--read about some folks using bondo or other two-part epoxy to cast cannonball molds.

Bondo's good to 700°F, then it gets brittle.  Any reason why you couldn't cast it onto the base and sides of a projectile to protect it from the rifling in a ML?

Thanks,

It would--for the projectiles that are close to bore-size.  I was thinking more along the lines of a 45 caliber projectile down the bore of my 54 caliber lyman trade rifle.  Not sure I can make up that big of a thickness difference with just paper.

Since I started this topic, I've learned of powder coating boolits.  Will head down that path for now....

You can mould them out of old milk jugs or other HDPE if you want.
