Shooting Baikal's .30-06 double rifle
« on: November 16, 2012, 09:17:29 AM »
I know this isn't a single shot rifle, but it's kind of like two single shot rifles...

I love double rifles, but I can't afford a London Best gun from Holland & Holland, so I'm making due with my Russian-built Baikal double rifle imported by European American Armory, better known as EAA. This .30-06 double rifle is actually a lot of fun to shoot.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmNynB30pSM

I'll bet it is fun to shoot forelock, & I don't know anybody who can afford a British best double either. I did get to hold one once but the $25,000 price for it used was beyond my reach.   :).

I have two single shots but haven't figured out a way to hook them together so I suppose I'll carry on with what I have. I am glad you are enjoying your double.

Best,

I've been looking at the .45-70 version of this for some time.  Thanks for showing it off.  8)

I have the Reminton Baikal SxS in 45-70.  Tried to sight it in with issue triggers, no way.  My favorite gunsmith and one of my best friends did a trigger job on it, what a world of difference.  Now it was shootable.  Had a couple of boxes of Rem. factory loads in 405s, got it sighted in at 100 yds.  Thats plenty of distance for the old girl, mounted an old Weaver 4.5V on it as couldn't see the open sights that well.  Now to handload some rounds tailored to this rifle, my other hunting 45-70 is a Ruger No. 1.  I load the No. 1 with nickled cases soI do not make any mistake in which rifle I'm useing.

I had one a few years back, it was an over under...a 30-06, it grouped nice, but the groups were about 6" apart diagonaly...I guess I could have sighted sighted one barrel in ( I had a scope on it..) and used it like a single shot  with a backer.   I recall it was in the 9 pound range, so I sold it.  Other than the weight, it was a nice rifle. It is common to have dispersion with a double rifle unless you are shooting the load it was set up for at the factory.  In other words, a double rifle is set up with one specific load to where both barrels shoot to the same point at 100 yds.  With a 30-06 that may be with 150 gr, 165, 180, 0r 200 gr bullets.  I would contact the manufacturer and find out what load the gun is set up with and you will find the 'sweet spot' where both barrels shoot to the same place.  You may also need to determine if it is a Rem or Winchester, etc load.  Good luck, it will make you very happy when it all comes together!  (pun intended)  44 Man

Except, some DR's allow the buyer to adjust the regulation to the load of their own chooseing, the Baikals are one of them.

I also have a Baikal S&S DR, the biggest complaint everyone has, is the HORRIBLE triggers!
