Bought ammo before I even bought the rifle....
« on: November 16, 2012, 02:45:55 PM »
So I purchase 100 rounds of the 17HMR rounds today from Cabelas for $30.00, it even comes with a cool little wooden storage box. You may be asking yourself, "Why buy the ammo before the rifle?" Well I know myself well enough, that if I were not to buy this ammo today and have it arrive at my doorstep in 2 weeks, I know there would be no drive, no urge, no want for me to go out and actually do the purchasing of the rifle (I'm just that way). So, with that being said, I went with the .17HMR over the HM2.
I figured this gives me 2 weeks to put away $200.00 dollars for one of these little beauties...
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ItemListing.aspx?catid=8116

Now this is where my questions come in. Myself, I know if I want to do my long range plinking i'm gonna want the rifle to have the scope mount AND hammer spur already incorporated in the deal. So that works out perfect because all 3 of these Sportster setups have those features. However, what is the difference between the Regular Black Polymer finish and the Monte Carlo finish?

Appreciate all the info on these little sportsters I can get.

Lot of guys buy a scope, then go look for a rifle to put under it.
I have a a spare gun case. Need to buy a 46" long rifle to put in it. :)

Really? Glad i'm not the only one to purchase the equipment in reverse order :D I'm actually REALLY stoked to get this rifle. Any good reviews on the sportster 17hmr?
How far will these .17hmr rounds fly on a nice calm day?

Makes sense to me! What're you gonna do, sell the ammo? That'd be pointless, might as well BUY the rifle for it :D

If you apply my wife's logic to it, you have 100 things that you can't use until you buy just one more thing.

don't need excuses- just cash.
no wife, and i've had to tell girlfriends
in the past that i'll be gone hunting/fishing/
camping for x days. if you want to go , fine.
no potty- squat in the woods over a latrine hole.
no shower- heat some water on the fire and wash with that
no tv- t.f.b. watch it when we get back.

consequently, if i want a new remingchesterlinger, and
can afford it , i buy it - no permission or sneaking
it in needed. you must not have trained your
mate correctly. if i wanted a new .17 handi
(and had the spare$$) there would be one in
the house post-haste

good luck with the stealth purchase! !  ;D

I enjoy agonizing over a purchase for months.
I'll change my mind 10 times before I get buy something.
When I do, I' committed.
Wanted a Rem 1100, agonized over it for a ong time, ended up with a Benelli Montefeltro, no regets.

Right now its a Yildez 410 single shot shotgun.
Decided to wait til Christmas.
Can't really use it until Feb 1 anyway.

Not really helping you here with the question about sportsters, but I would take a hard lok at the Savage before I bought.

I'm the same way man. Been contemplating over whether I should get the HMR, HM2 or the 22LR. I went from wanting the HMR SPortster at first, to changing my mind on calibers and going to the 22LR's. I was minutes away from purchasing a Ruger 10/22, then fell out at the last seconed. Went back to wanting the HM2 with the Savage MarkV 5 Shot Bolt Action.

Now after seeing that .17HMR ammo at Cabelas, something made me buy it. I knew then I was gonna be stuck on the Sportster Single Shot in 17HMR. The cost is still so dinky compared to my .45-70 rounds.

I did not have a Sportster, but I did have a nice Savage. I hit some squirrels @ around 175 yards with it, the grays were dead, the fox squirrels got up and went back up the tree and I had to shoot again. Very accurate gun, not so powerful, if you stay on light stuff will work fine. I sold mine when the ammo went crazy and I could reload for a Hornet a lot cheaper. None the less, a fun and extremely accurate gun.

Sportster Hummers are great little guns... VERY accurate, I sighted mine in with 20 rounds and then proceed to blow up 36 consecutive eggs at 100 yards without a miss... Sweet!

Comforting words guys. I'm crammed for hours at work this week, so hopefully I can take my paycheck right to the sporting goods store :D . Anyone have a favorite website for HMR rounds? Don't care on the brand, the cheaper the better for me.

Back to the original question - the word "finish" refers to the barrel, not the stock.  It would appear that two of these don't have a Monte Carlo stock and the other does, although all three use the same stock photo.

Quite a few years ago a local sporting goods store was going out of business and I was lucky enough to buy 500 rounds of 32-20 cartridges for around $40.00. I couldn't wait to tell someone just how shrewd/lucky a wheeler dealer I was so I stopped at a neighbors workshop to tell the old bird about my good fortune. His response to my story was a big belly laugh because he said it reminded him of the little old lady that went out and bought a pair of shoes that were way too small to fit her feet because she had gotten such a good deal on a case of foot powder the day before. I still have  the 32-20 rifle I later bought and Willie is long gone but I still smile when I remember his story. I guess the moral of the story is a lot of people buy ammo, scopes, etc. before they get the firearm.
