Pig Pic, a bit graphic
« on: November 17, 2012, 01:51:54 AM »
Today's plan was to test out my new handloads for the 500 mag.
All was going well till I tripped over myown feet and fell flat on my face.
But onward, because I was after a boar at the time.
As I lined up my shot I noticed something had changed. My factory rear site with the two green dots had gone fron it's spot on the sight ramp connecting it to the barrel.
So it was back to the truck for the dogs and a sticking knife.
I din't get that boar but some others.
Now I need to find another factory rear site.

The rifle barrel in the edge of the pic is a 1917 Lee Enfield 303, always best to have something with a bit more authority that a knife for when the boars fight back.
Can you tell me if that missing factory site for my 500 mag is available to purchase any where?

Michael,

IIRC the factory sights on a 500 S&W barrel are plastic.  If they are plastic I would replace both front and rear sights with metal ones.  Look at the FAQ sticky and search sights and I think you will find what you need.  Good luck hunting after Arnold Ziffel.'

Why not go one on one next time... his tusks against your knife. Leave the dogs at home and see how it turns out. ;)
Having the dogs hold it while you stick it just doesn't seem right.

One on one with a boar that size and I will loose every time, even the dogs have to wear armour.
Still them holding is no sure thing this fella threw the dogs off, and I mean into the air off, at least three times before I could get in close enough to grab him by both back legs and flip him on his side for the knife.

Found the picture from a few minutes earlier, before he was dragged out of the thorn bushes.
Not much room to move in there without getting spiked. But the camo seems to work, since the original plan was stalking.

It might be a good chance to get a peep sight since you need to replace it anyway.

There is plenty of open spaces between the thorn bushes, but the pigs do love to fight in cover.
I will let you know what replacement sight I get after I have a chat with Brian56.

Seems to me, if I was close enough for a knife, I would be close enough to stick that .500 in his ear. Then I won't worry about sights--woodsrunner

LOL. My thought exactly. But of coarse there are bragging rights to consider... ;)

Good job on the boar!! I always thought a spear hunt would be fun. Nearly everyone I have shot has been hair singing distances anyhow! ::)

For me at least, its not about bragging rights. Its about over penetration and your dogs safety. I originally joined this board looking for the perfect gun to shoot over my dogs with. Never found it, still stick them... Dogs get hurt. Its part of the game. They wouldn't have it any other way, or they just wouldn't do it. But getting shot on accident doesn't factor in there.
