Best ammo for Walther P-22
« on: November 17, 2012, 05:25:09 PM »
I'm looking for some info on which brand of ammo will work best in the P-22. A neighbor bought one new, and is having the Devil's own time getting it to function reliably. So far, using CCI mini mags, it'll go 4-5 shots, then it doesnt want to feed well enough to chamber the next one. This occurs every time it goes to the range.
Have there been any problems with this pistol, that may be the culprit, feed ramp etc. or is this just teething pains ?
Would like to hear from those who have one of these, and what their experiences have been, fixes for problems etc. Thanks!

I've got one but mine is still NIB unfired. I'll get around to it one of these days.

Do you have an extra magazine? If so try it and see if it is doing the same. If not the magazine then I'd do a proper cleaning and lube. If that doesn't fix it then it is warranty time.

I have owned two P-22's, one in particular with many thousands of rounds thru it.  Both have been very reliable.  Like GB said, a good cleaning (.22's are a lot dirtier, and ammo sensitive the most centerfires), and testing with another magazine are in order.

Though not experiencing the issue myself, I have heard that some p-22's are very ammo sensitive.  I would pick up a half dozen different makes of ammo, and try them all, until a reliable brand has been identified.  If it still is not reliable, then yep, back to the manufacturer..

I like the light weight, compact size, adjustable sights, and decent accuracy of this gun, and often carry it in my back pocket for walks in the woods.

My daughters P-22 eats mini-mags without a burp.

go to rimfirecentral.com and look up their walther board - they have the bible on the P22

Depending on the vintage of the gun, it is likely a magazine issue. The earlier mags were suspect.

Mine needed a little feed ramp polish. It definitely needed a breakin period. I ran about 250 mini mags, then about 250 golden bullets. After that, it will shoot any bulk ammo with almost no malfunctions. I shoot cheap-o winchester, thunderbolts, etc.

Def likes fast ammo when new.

Glad to hear it seems to be working now, I was going to suggest CCI Stingers.  Sometimes during break in a faster impulse is needed.  Also add me to the clean and lube list, and the check the magazine list for future (if any) malfunctions.

I discovered than the 'lead' bulleted 22LR ammo is not as consistent in bullet dia. so I run auto loader (pistol and rifle) rounds through my old Paco Kelly sizer first. The flash plated bullets have been better in this regard, so I would try them first to see what brand works or balks. The less expensive waxed lead bullet loads seem to often shoot pretty dirty, too. I swab chambers with a solvent soaked Q-tip then dry with the other end and toss.

I've had my P22 for a number of years and find it to be somewhat ammo sensitive.  The somewhat applies to various brands (foreign made) of sub-sonic ammo.  Most all high speed stuff will run just fine and without hic-cough (hic-cup to sumovya) but on occasion some Mexican made sub-sonic ammo will not cycle the action, even if clean (happens in my other 22s too, so it's not the pistol).

Remington Sub-Sonic and CCI Standard Velocity work the pistol just fine.  Remingotn's golden bb (22 High Speed) is the nutz, as is most other high speed.  Those P22s are just way too much fun....
