257 Roberts Handi harvests meat again

Been out deer hunting 2 weeks without any luck, because of terrible weather. Three days ago we struck it lucky and I dropped a young doe with a single shot. At about 200yrds. I hit her at the bottom of the neck Just in front of the shoulder. Sorry no pictures. She dropped on the spot and never moved. That 257 Roberts has never needed more than one shot ever since I had it.

Last week I had the Ruger #1 out in 6.5x284 but found it too heavy to lug around, and I have to use X-sticks with it. Even though the doe is very young the meat is quite tough.

The .257 Roberts in sone of my all-time favorites (the other two are the 7x57 and 6.5x55).
 
Thanks for sharing, Fred.  It's nice to see someone else is out there putting that wonderful old cartridge to work.

Congrats on your deer.  However, get a crockpot (slow cooker) and you won't even need a knife.

This is the second deer in a row that is tough. It must be something the deer eat in the woods? Both deer were dropped on the spot and never ran after the shot. As clean a shot you could wish. The kills were several miles apart. Both deer were taken in wooded terrain. I hung one hind quarter see if that will improve the meat.
This is a different place from where I hunted before, in around corn fields. Nevertheless the 257 Roberts as usual did a fine job. We also got a young moose a week before and the meat on that animal is suberb. Maybe next year I put in for a moose and put my 257Wby to use.

Congratulations on your deer Fred!  Good to see you post again.  Haven't heard about anything they eat making them tough, I do know it can change the flavor of their meat.  A mule deer that is taken around farm ground will taste a lot like whitetail, one off the open prairie taste like sage.  Again, congratulations Fred.  DP

are they tougher or fattier up north of the border?  I figure that if they are bred bigger they should have more sinew and grisel as a "foundation" to the mass that is supposed to come to them in maturity.  around here the deer and the habitat varies from one spot to another so I cannot really get a definitive opinion about "general" whitetails (in pettis county, missouri).
