T/C scout
« on: November 20, 2012, 03:43:18 AM »
I have a .50 caliber scout.  lateley I have been having some blowback through the nipple.  It burnt my face and I now have blackpowder in my rt cheek below my eye.  I was useing 80 grains ffg.  I have shot that load for years with no problems.  Anyone else have that trouble with a scout?  i love the rifle but it aint burning me anymore.     ><> del

I have a 50 also and it's a great gun. The only thing I can think of is the nipple is getting some carbon build up, not plugged but a thin coating in the vent holes. I take a thin wire to mine when cleaning and haven't had a problem. I do remember on a couple of occasions when shooting it a lot that would cause some blow back. (30-40 shots without a disassemble  cleaning)

Had that happen a couple times and it was always with the wind in my face.  I thought it was just being blown back from the vents.  It shot like a dream with 90 FFg Goex and 300 grain XTP's in the T/C Break-O-Way sabots, but I got rid of it after that.  Never could get that first-run 1 in 20" twist barrel to shoot Maxi Hunters or Maxi Balls either one.  You could hit a 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper every time at 100 yards, but where on the paper would be anyone's guess.  The Thunderhawk that I replaced it with shot just as good with sabots and I never got anything in my face again.

Thanks for the replies.  It isn't wind doing it, I have small particles of black powder IN my face.  I can't get it out.  I have srubbed it till i thought the skin was coming off.  I keep it real clean.  I got this rifle way back in the late 80s, the first year they came out.  Piled the deer up with it.  Guess it is time for a new toy.  Gonna trade one of my recurves for a newer cva if I can find one.  thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving!    ><>  del

Something else that I remember was the nipple will get deformed a little at the cap end which will make it difficult for the caps to come off. When this happens powder will blow back onto you from the cap going off.

Sounds like a weakened hammer spring to me.  Not holding the spent cap tightly in place maybe?
