460 S&W deer kills
« on: November 20, 2012, 09:53:32 AM »
Shot 3 deer with my 460 yesterday evening. All I can say is, "WOW". Instant drops from 75-150 yds.

Congrats. Your freezer will be looking good. Handgun or rifle and what was your load ?

When you say "evening" I am assuming a short time frame.  That is a good outing.  You must have been butchering LATE into the night.
I have a 460 handgun and have been thinking about setting up an Encore for my son, who lives in a slug only state, but allows handguns and some rifles in handgun calibers.  They just opened to 460 this year.  My thoughts are, based on ballistics and energy, it should be dependable out to about 200 yards.  Anyone have any experience out that far or farther, or any educated thoughts?
Thanks,
Jackpine

I've taken a bunch of animals with mine including Zebra and a Red Hartebeest.  My furthers shot was about 180 yards on a Klipspringer which is about the size of a large dog.

There are several things I can say about my Encore 460 S&W Magnum; it's a real hammer, if you hit it, it will easily take deer at 200+ yards, it's hard on scopes if loaded to its full potential (I've broken 2 or 3) and it's probaby the hardest handgun cartridge I've gotten to shoot well in my Encore handgun.

The deer at 152 yds looked as if you put your fist through it and folded like a rag doll. 200+ lb buck at 80 yds melted in his tracks. 1.1" high at 100 and 3.1" low at 200. How can you go wrong. 250 yds is 9.1" low. 300 yds puts it 19" low.
In a 250 gr bullet you hold better energy down range.
