Ye ole .30-40 Krag comes out after 25 years...
« on: November 22, 2012, 07:00:17 AM »
Well, since I started reloading for .30-40 Krag, it finally came out after a 25 year hiatus.  Took a doe the second day of deer season for me too.  It was the gun I used to take my first doe as a teenager, so was a fun day.  8)  Didn't get a pic of her due to a miscommunication with my brother, but was fun to get it going again.

I've shot it while developing loads, but not for hunting since 1987.  hehe

I handled a Krag years ago, and couldn't figure how metal sliding on metal could be so smooth. :o

Love the bolt on this thing.  This is the rifle my great grandfather carried during WWI.  He came home and cut down the stock some as many guys did in those days according to him.  It passed down to me this year, but my grandfather let me carry it during deer season in 1987 also.  Other than that, it hasn't been out too much.  Sometimes I just pull it out and feel that smooth bolt.  ;)

Sure it wasnt the Spanish American War? As far as I know they were long out of issue come WWI after the Springfield '03 was put into service. Some will cringe at the sporterizing, but that rifle has a legitimate history; cool that its been in the family for so long.
FWIW, and dont ask how I know: Do Not trust old leather slings!

I only know what the family has passed down to me history wise.  My great-grandpa Otis didn't fight in the Spanish-American war but did fight in WWI as far as I know.  He would tell stories of he and several guys being bored and shooting to hit the church bell in the city they were stationed near.  I will see if I can find a city name, but grandpa passed this year and I don't know if my dad has more details.  ;)  If the army then was anything like it is now, however, I believe being issued an old firearm wouldn't be that unheard of.  I was an 11B in the 80's and we were still being handed M16-A1 variants from Vietnam.  ;)

Even if the 'details' got turned into more of a family mythology, no worries, it still has a bunch of history with him that I can appreciate and am glad you have, and are playing with it.
FWIW, I have my G-dad's '98 Krag rifle, all original and love it just for that (but it is a fine looker and shooter too  ;D ). He was to be an Army Medic in WWI but the Armistice got declared just before he was to be shipped over. A country boy and hunter/fisher for the pan, then later sportsman, he bought that Krag when they were sold off cheap. Ive heard a couple variations on that from $1.98 to $3.98, but mostly I remember him telling ME that it would "shoot the eye out of a squirrel at 100yd.", with a big grin and a wink. As far as I know, it was his only 'deer rifle' the rest of his life.
I have shot it in a couple of friendly vintage rifle matches with cast bullet reloads and its still a dandy. A brother of his, my G-Uncle, I guess, was in the (IIRC) 3rd Wisconsin Volunteers in the SAW, Philippines, and may have been issued the '98 Krag Rifle, though Im not sure (gonna have to look into that...). The Rough Riders had '96(?) Krag Carbines while other volunteers, and the Buffalo Soldiers had Trapdoors, only regulars in Cuba were to have Krags. At 'The Hills' I would have grabbed a 'Long Tom' rifle first chance to lay down some long range fire if I'd had the chance.

I suspect your grandfather's story could be correct.  The military often issued older model stock as long as they had it, especially back then.  Manufacturing and procurement was much different than it is today.  Our military today is awash in black rifles and they are viewed as disposable.

Thanks for sharing your story.  My father's first deer rifle was an old 30-40 Krag.  His was better at shooting around corners than shooting straight lines though  :o

I handled an old Krag at my local shop a couple years ago. It had the smoothest bolt ever and the woodwork was beautiful. Of course I wasn't smart enough to buy it... and haven't seen one since. :(

Bolts feel smooth probably because they only have one locking lug?

If anyone is interested, I have a Krag I would like to sell. It is full military and un altered. It comes with a Bayonette & scaberd as well as a Collins green bone machetti. It belongs to a friend of mine and she could use the cash. Her father brought it home from the war and said it was a Philapene issue set.
PM me and I'll answer any other questions.

Are you serious!?   :o

Determine what you want for this and post it in the firearms classifieds!   ::)   I doubt it will last long and at the very least you'll find out what people will pay for it!   ;D

Heck, I'd be interested!  I never carried one but I have a picture of my Daddy along with a bunch of other boots taken in 1916 when he went through Navy Boot Camp somewhere around the Great Lakes.  All of them were holding Krags!  I'd love to be able to tell my Granbabies that this is a rifle just like your Great Gran Daddy had in this picture!  :)

That'd probably mean a lot more to me then them, but you get the... um...  picture!   ;)
