to .480 Ruger? Any one have an opinion on this? I like the looks of the Bowen Alpines.

I used to own a blued 5.5 inch Redhawk in .44 mag, and really liked the balance and accuracy of that gun.  Never should have sold it.  Can you open the original six shot cylinder to .480, or will a five shot cylinder have to be used?  Though I never owned one, using my .44 mags., and waiting for a .480 Super Blackhawk that never came, I always thought the .480 would be a great big game round, using a WFLN bullet at moderate velocity, punching a big hole, and plenty of penetration, without the blast and sharp kick of some of the faster rounds, like the 454, or 475.

SB, I have a Redhawk in 475 Linebaugh, it is a 5 shot. I shoot the 480 Ruger out of it all the time, and if I need more I load a 475 Linebaugh. Gary Reeder does a conversion on the Redhawk, but it is over $2200.  It is called the Mastodon. You might want to look around for pricing on the Redhawk, the Blackhawk is not as expensive to have converted. I have one of them in 475 Linebaugh as well. Love the idea of being able to shoot the 480 Ruger out of them. But if I go for something big, I can load a 475 Linebaugh.

I've talked to Hamilton Bowen and his big bore conversions all use 5 shot cylinders and if I went with a Alpine it would be even more expensive.

I know it's not the Redhawk, but, Ruger is re releasing the .480 Ruger in their Super Redhawk this year.

I almost did the same. I sent a redhawk to dustin linebaugh to get punched out to 480. We talked about it and he thought the existing cylinder was thick enough to punch out to a 6 shot. When he got it and started measuring he decided it was borderline. He said hed do it but it would take a 5 shot cylinder. that put it out of my price range as im retired now and the wallet isnt near as thick. I ended up having it round butted and cut to 3.5 inch and left a 44 mag. In a redhawk the 44 mag can push 320 grian bullets up into 454 power levels anyway and hold 6 rounds vs 5 so i just couldnt see spending that much money on the project for such little gain. It would have made a cool gun though. I think if i was going to spend that much id go with a 50ae conversion and get about the same level of power as the 480 and get a cool moon clip gun in the process. Now if ruger would come out with a 5 shot 4 inch redhawk or a bisley single action 480 id be all over one. But i just couldnt justify1.5- 2k anymore to have one made.

Lloyd, I agree with the .50 AE. I decided to try and just wait for Rugers .480s to get to my distributors. Bought a Jack Weigand scope mount for my Redhawk and put my Leopold 4X on it to play with. Those custom guys don't do anything fast, Heinie took close to 4 years to do my 1911, while I chewd my fingernails.

I own a 5 1/2 in stainless Redhawk in 45 LC. Definately built like a tank and with me being a reloader I can go as mild or wild as I want to. Mostly what stays in it is 255 gr SWC's over 10.0 gr of Unique. Very accurate and will do most anything I want it to without a boat load of recoil. I have some 250 gr XTP's over a pile of Lilgun if I happen to need some Sasquatch loads. It likes them to but they aren't a lot of fun to shoot more than a few times.
