Thoughts on 94 AE in .357, is this a good deal? gun?
« on: February 11, 2004, 03:24:09 PM »
Found a Winchester 94 AE  at a local pawn shop.

It is calibered in 357 mag.  In fact that is only cartridge mentioned on barrel, will this shoot 38 specials?

This rifle has a 24 inch round barrel, stock is perfect and blueing is great with only one minor scratch at receiver.  Gun is dirty and I will inspect with a bore light on my next visit.

It is priced at $274.  Is this a good price?

Any thing to know about this gun in checking out for purchase.

I already reload 357 and 38sp.  Are there any concerns or special procedures to reloadigng for  this rifle?

Thanks for any help.

Well I bought the rifle today.

It does feed 357 mag and 38 special.  The finish and fit are nearly new and I got it for $245 out the door.  It sure looks good next to my 30-30 Winchester.

I have no papers or manual to go with it...does anybody know what kind of  pressure this will take?

that  is  a  good  deal  considering  i  just  seen  some  in  the  condition you described as  for 300.00 used given  you  have  a  longer  barrel   your  velocity  is  going  to  be  increased  you  may  have  problems  with  the  heavier  bullets such  as  180 as  far  as  feeding  goes i  believe  it  will  be  safe  to  relaod  as  you  do  your  hand gun

Fred,

Mine feeds a lot better with 357 than 38SPL, the shorter case can sometimes "jump" over the top of the chamber when feeding.

Regarding pressure well, I've shot 357 magnum loadings that are really hot using 180grn bullets with no ill effects at all so go for it!  These rifles are stronger than pistols so any loads thats good for a pistol is OK in the rifle.  You will find that the muzzle velocity is higher since you haven't got the pressure loss of a revolver & a much longer barrel.  About 100-150fps faster is usual.

Enjoy it!

Numpty Pete,

Thanks!

I just got some hard cast 200 grain bullets with a large flat meplate and gas checks...this should be a good deer rig.  Let the fun begin.
