Author Topic: 1911 #2 is a Remington R1 (Read 950 times)

#1 Was an original GI rattle trap that never was very accurate and was so worn that it was not worth the parts replacement so it went down the road. But #2 is a Remington R1. I guess they were made to be close to a GI but with a few modern tweaks. I like this one ! It only has a couple hundred pills out the barrel and is not qualified as broken in yet but I have had zero problems. I did do a little drimmel polish/cleanup on it before I took it to the range. Accuracy is great with my hand loads - 230 fmj over a load of unique. Have not tried hollow points yet , that is for the next trip.

I've had an R-1 about 5 months now. All reloads and factory shoot great although I had to drift rear sight to the right quite a bit. It is accurate and a pussy cat to shoot. I carry in a Galco high ride holster very comfortably.

The Remington is readily available, but the Ruger is not. I ask this on another thread. Why is that?

I don't see Ruger geared for this kind of production on this gun. That can/could be, good or bad.

About a year ago, I bought an R1 and was well satisfied with it. Recently, a Cabela's store near me had three reconditioned R1's for sale. These were guns that hadn't made the grade first time around at Remington and had to go back to the warranty dept. for rework. They were being sold as used guns with new warranty. Looked like new; boxed like new. They were reduced $150, so I decided to buy one and have my second R1. I figure if the gun went back for to the warranty dept. for rework, it ought to be well figured out by now. Nicer trigger pull than #1 but I haven't had it to the range yet. They are fit well, everything on the two I have is tight. They aren't a Kimber or a Colt, but sturdy and cost less and I'm happy with them.

today, during my monthly outing I visited a very nicely set up gun shop. Prepare for it, steady, they had AR15s on the wall, for sale!!!

I got a look at the Remington 1911 model R1. Very nice fit and finish. Trigger pull in the 4-5# range. $699. Looks like a deal to me. I asked to see the Ruger 1911. He said they cannot get them, at least to their shop. They a nice display of 1911s by many brands. Sig 1911, cerakote, checkered front strap, ambi safety, beavertail, 1913 rail $1150. I looked at a used Para 14-45, alloy frame. $925. I may return and buy it.

oooh oooh, The gun shop guy told me that Remington will be coming out with a Commander size 45 in the late summer.!!!!!!!

Back in the black and white days of comedy there was an actor ( I forget who) who would say 'oooh oooh' when he thought of something.

To me 'oh oh' is like thinking ' oh darn, are we ever going to get it'.

After going the rough road with 1911's in the beginning I figure any functioning, flawless cycling, reliabile and dependable 1911 brand new right out of the box is a #1 to me(new ones). So far my new auto ordnance army and my SA GI Mil-Spec both are '05's have been flawless right out of the box. I do look forward to buying more new ones just to test them on my playing field not some gun rags test. My new AO came out better in my 250rd test than the gun rag said. I'm sorry to say i been busy playing with revolvers.
The only thing i do to any new 1911 right out of the box is to polish the feed ramp and make sure i remove all the finish and machine marks if it has any. Then i lube the gun with moly. Later on i may do the disconnector ramp and install the full length guide rod with the 18# recoil spring too.

I love the look of the Remingtons, but one small thing keeps me from buying. The grip safety dosen't have the little bump. Years ago I had a Gold Cup that shot cloverleafs, but I could never get a grip on the gun that would always disengage the grip safety. I ended up taping the safety in place--very dangerous. So, since then, I've never considered the purchase of a 1911 without the bump.
