Picked up a 357 Talo
« on: November 25, 2012, 03:15:51 AM »
Hello all, I haven't posted here since I sold my Handi rifles about 7 years ago. Lately, I've had the notion to pick one up. Almost picked up one in 500S&W, but couldn't justify the ammo costs for something that would be primarily a range toy. While browsing the local gun show last weekend, a short barreled Handi caught my eye. Seller said it was a Talo 357. It was in like new condition. After handling, I had to have it.  ;D  I emailed Talo to verify what the seller told me, but got no response.  >:(  I hadn't been here for a few years, so I didn't know what it was for sure. After doing some searching here yesterday, I found out what I had.  ;)  Here's a pic of it;

I've had it out a couple times and it's a nice shooter. The action is stiff, but it has loosened a little. I stripped it and applied some lube.  My only issue is the sights. With my old eyes and bifocals, I need a ghost ring style sight. I looked on Williams web site, but its not very user friendly. In my searching yesterday, I came across this thread;
http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,212688.msg1099138463/topicseen.html#msg1099138463
Does anyone know if that is still available? If so, is it just the top part of the sight, or is it the whole sight?
Thank you

Welcome back! The WGRS is still available from H&R(there is no NEF any more), part number is in on the retail parts page in the FAQs sticky, just be sure to order the screws for it as they aren't included as one member just learned.

Congrats on a great find. I have one I mounted a leupold 1-4x shotgun scope on. It took a little while to get used to the thick crosshairs but they really stand out in the woods. I bought it for my son to use for deer next year as there is little recoil. Mine shoots really well with federal fusion ammo and within 75 or so yards I'm sure it will do a great job on deer.

If you go with the peep you will probably need a taller front sight.

Thanks, Tim. But I'm not looking to replace the whole site, I just want to replace the wing(?) with a ghost ring style sight. I think I found what I'm looking for though in that link. It's from Midway;

Thanks again.

Even with the Midway peep sight I posted?
Thanks.
Thanks to je265 and JeffH, as well.  ;D

If you just replace the blade carrier on the WGOS sight with the ghost ring carrier and leave the sight mounted mid barrel, you won't need a higher front sight. The WGRS sight is mounted in the two rear scope mounting holes which puts it much higher than a barrel mounted sight, that's why they said you'd need a higher front sight for it to work, the ghost ring aperture isn't a WGRS sight, just an option, the WGOS sight comes on the Talo rifles, the base of the WGOS and WGRS is the same AFAIK tho, I've not compared them.

45-70gov and geartow, thanks for your recomendations, but I was hoping that the Williams ghost ring from Midway will work.
Well, got the sight attachment today, and its perfect!!  ;D

Can't wait to get it sighted in!  But that is going to be a few weeks. My receiver and stock are scheduled to arrive in NY tomorrow to have a 44mag barrel fitted.  ;)

Again, thanks to you all!   ;D

Talo Trapper 357 and 44 mag rifles came on SB1 frames just as the factory 357 and 44 mags do currently, but the barrels are marked SB2. The 45-70 Talo Trapper came on an SB2 frame.

As usual, Tim is correct. The 357 barrel said SB2, but the reciever said 357,44, and shotgun barrels only.  ;)

I did the same thing on my 45/70 22"

except I didn't have the Ghost Ring, I just used a dovetailed attachment from another Williams and took out the aperture.

it works better than the open sights.

but I much prefer a sight much closer to my eye.
