Terrible pain, I'm miserable.
« on: November 25, 2012, 08:00:59 AM »
Been hurting for about a week and 1/2 in my rt upper leg. My knee has been swelled and hurting for a long time now the pain is going up my leg. My ins will be good in a week but I can't wait that long. The past 4 days I've been taking 600 mg of ibuprofen ever 4 hours. I can sit reasonablt confortably but stand, walking, or laying down is excruciating.

I took a tylenol 3 the other night and it didn't do much good, 3 hrs later I took 600 mg of ibu. My neighbor had several back surgeries so I figured he'd have some hvy duty pain meds. He brought me up 4 pills of hydracordone 750s and told me to take 1 with a tylenol. It helped but still didn't kill the pain. I'm going to try to get a dr appt in the morning, I know he won't care if I chg it for a bit. I've got to have some relief. The pain goes from a point on my back hip to the knee with the worst in the upper part of my leg. Sciatica maybe?? The pain is constant and I haven't hurt like this since open heart over 9 years ago.

I took Patty to a light up thing yesterday, they gave free buggy rides. They advertised for noon but didn't show up til 2. We sat on that concrete bench 2 1/2 hours. She had wanted a buggy ride for over 30 years. All the pain in the world was worth the huge grin on her face the whole trip.

While there waiting a couple of young lds ladies came by hawking their cult. I had fun with them. I got the talker very confused, I enjoyed that. I just took 400 mg of ibu + an xtra str tylenol, I'm kinda killing time for them to act so I can lay dwn. I thought I could wait another week til my ins kicks in but I can't, the pain is getting worse every day. We even stayed home from Church today, I'm using the walker in the house. POWDERMAN. :( :(

I have been fighting an ear infection for almost two weeks now. I was literaly sleeping maybe two hours a night, broken up into 15-30 minute intervals. Finally went to the doc yesterday for antibiotics, he didnt give me any painkillers though. Better to be laid up now than on a nice summer day

In my situation, Ibuprofen and Tylenol work better than Vicodin every time. One night I did have to break into my emergency first aid kit for a real painkiller that I have been saving for years. Sure glad I had it when I needed it!

Are you sure you haven't contracted a staff infection ? I mean have you done anything lately that
could be attributed to this ? Sciatica usually effects both legs, and numbness in your pinky finger or a
big toe would be a dead give away to that. PM , I need more info and a better description of your symptoms to be able to nail down anything wrong. Are you a diabetic, is there any discoloration in your effected knee? The pain going up your leg sounds like its because of what's going on with your knee. The sciatic nerve is involved here but it doesn't sound like it is the cause.

Hydroconode is a localized anesthetic,it may not be targeting the true cause of the pain is why it isn't
working so well.Try an ice pack and stay on the ibupropin,we have got to focus on getting that swelling down ASAP. If ibupropin isn't working switch to naproxen sodium as found in Aleve.
And for goodness sake stay off that leg!Elevate it a little so you don't get the throbbing effect as bad.
PM me if it gets any worse and let me know your location so I can refer you immediately. Anna

They are right PM, if it turns out to be one of those they can break loose and cause a lot of damage.
But with one of those in a knee they cause some discoloration by the blood flow being restricted .
A purplish bruse looking area will start to show up,and you may not be able to bend your knee at all.
Extremities below the knee will also show signs of this, numbing of the toes and a real subjectivity
to any cold. You do need to go to an ER, if you are a diabetic this can cause you to lose the leg.
Guys he is not telling us all of his symptoms , only about the pain associated with this. He also has a history of heart problems of which he said were operated on. A colapsed aorta in one of many places
could make him a candidate for a stint. Running up his leg could also mean a blood flow problem,
without seeing him we are all only speculating he needs to see a doctor .

I've taken the hydracordone 2x today, saving 1 for bedtime. Our dr is pretty good with extreme cases so I'm sure he'll work me in tomorrow. If I can get something to lessen the pain for a week my ins will be good and then I can get some testing done. My sister had sciatica from her lower back down one leg, I'm guessing thats what it is. Sitting like this I'm reasonably comfortable but walking, standing, or laying down is the pits. After 1 dose today I was able to lay down and nap for over an hour. Thanks for the kind words and prayers. The knee has been getting worse for years and has been swelled a long time. I imagine it is pretty well bone on bone. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

If it is sciatica, there are exercises that ca help.  Google the Mc Kenzie Method for back pain.  I had sciatica so bad it brought me to tears.  Blood Clots in the legs are painful and life threatening.  You need to get a Doppler test done as soon as possible and get your blood thinned if the test is positive.  I had them, I was kept on Cumedin for a year.

Charlie.  I had a bloodclot in my right leg once.  It broke loose and hit my lung and made a big mess.  It also headed for my heart, but hung up just before entering.  I even stopped breathing at one point.  Good thing I was ready to meet the Lord, but he had other plans for me, so here I am for the time being. :)

I have an dr appt this afternoon. Spent most of the night sitting up on the couch. Finally took more ibuprofen and got a bit of sleep.
Patty had been sick and her legs were really weak so I'd been having to lift her up off the couch for a week or so. Then last Tues she went to the bathroom about 3 am. She couldn't stand up so she crawled into the hall and woke me by using a hammer on the floor. She couldn't go any farther, just too weak. I did a dead lift from the floor, she weighs just over 200 lbs. I fear that I put a lot more stress on an already bad knee and thats when the real pain began and been getting worse every day. THe walking I had to do Sat for her carriage ride I'm sure didn't help matters either, but it was worth it. THe look on my princess face was priceless. Hopefully doc will give me something where I'll be able to get a good nights sleep for a change, I'll find out this afternoon. Thanks for all the prayers. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Powderman,
Had similiar problem with herniated disk in my lower back back in 1999.  I can truthfully say " I feel your pain"! Hopefully with a good scan"mri" the problem will be diagnosed readily and exercise and medicine will resolve this condition. When you picked up your wife that probably really set things in fast motion!
In my rehab they put me in a traction setup where my neck and head were stationary and had a weight pulley harnessed to my feet and ankles where they actually stretched my backbone and caused supposedly very tiny fractures which as they healed with calcium build up in these tiny fractures the pressure on the sciata nerve was attenuated and helped to lessen the pain.
So here is to a speedy recovery!

FOURBEE. No, the swelled knee has been like that a long time, I'm sure it's bone on bone. After my ins kicks in I'll be able to find out. I took a oxycodone-acetamenophin, generic for percocet,  for pain several hours ago and it dulled the pain a bit but I still couldn't lay down. Tomorrow will be better as I'll be on both meds. I think I'll take an xtra str tylenol with the other pill before bed tonight. I was comfortable sitting and napping on the couch last night and earlier today, may have to do it again. My neighbor had the same thing and his disc popped back into place on it's own after the meds relaxed his back muscles, hope mine will too. I knew better than to pick Patty straight up from the floor but at 3 am being awakened from a sound sleep my judgement was not good. POWDERMAN.  ;) ;)

The knee is not related to sciatica, but if you have bone-on-bone that would do it for the knee. Sounds like there's two problems. You could try an inversion table--- it applies traction by hanging you upside down.  (Don't try it alone, if you do, because you might need help getting back up.) That would help with the back pain. The knee is going to take steroids, and maybe antibiotics for the swelling. You may need surgery for a long term fix. That's a tough combination to deal with.
If you give up, THEY don't have to win.

But the sciatic runs through the knee Quan, and can be irritated by a knee problem. This was the problem that put Joe Namith on the sidelines. But I have agreed it is not the sciatic causeing this.
But irritation of that nerve can cause severe pain in any extremity. Leading to a lot of misdiagnosis.

Glad to see you getting relief.  When I went in for my wife's scripts they pointed out to me that 2 of them were the same thing with different names given by a surgeon and a pain specialist, both with acitominophen.  Acitominophen can play hell with your liver if you take too much.  It is the ingredient in Tylenol and is also called APAP on some labels.  So an extra strength Tylenol and a Percocet may by too much at once.  They also told us to use something like Ibuprofin with the prescriptions as a different formula sometimes will fill the gaps left by one only.  Your pharmacy should be able to tell you the allowed amounts.  Karen's didn't even let me ask, just flat out told me to be ware.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you

Pain relief medicine is a short term answer.  I wouldn't let the Docs near my back with a knife either.  The exercises I mentioned have taken me, my Farrier ,my M-I-L  and my neighbor who rides and trains horses daily from down and out, to pain free.  The blood clot issue is another different matter........it can kill you.  Your knee my exacerbate your sciatica by causing you to alter your gate.

2000 mg in 24 hrs is the maximum dose for Tylenol. More than that risks liver damage, especially if you drink alcohol, too. That's 2000 mg from all sources. Pain meds that end with "---cet" have Tylenol in them: Percocet, Lorcet, Darvocet, etc. That is where people get into trouble. Some of those combo drugs have 500 mg of Tylenol per pill. That means TWO doses per day if you're taking two at a time. Neither Tylenol nor narcotics work very well for nerve pain--- that burning, shooting, electric pain that goes with sciatica. The sciatic nerve emerges from the lower spine and goes down the buttocks and then down the outside back of the leg to the feet. If the swelling in the knee were pinching the sciatic nerve, the sciatic pain would normally be from the knee down. It might go the other way, but that would be unusual. The back pain is more likely caused by the slipped disk(s).  An inversion table will help that. Ask your doc about injections of collagen, or even silicon for the knee joint as an alternative to surgery. If they give you any grief, look for another doctor. The Sportsman's Guide has inversion tables for less than $160. I'm sure other places have them, too.
