Want a recoil pad for A2 stock
« on: November 25, 2012, 02:10:59 PM »
I bought a Bushmaster patrolman carbine and change the upper to a .450 Hornady Bushwacker caliber.  I also changed out the stock to a stationary A2 stock. I would like to install a recoil pad for #1--my rifle has more kick to it than I am comfortable with after two rotator cuff surgeries on my shooting shoulder and #2--I would also like more reach, at least from 1 to 2 inches.  Anybody got an suggestions for a pad.  Our only shade tree gunsmith within an hours drive has retired so this is going to be a DIY project.  Thanks.

DJ I'm not aware of anything other than the slip-on limbsaver for an A2 that would do anything close to what you want it to.  Some of the skeletonized multi-position stocks come with optional pads but they don't fit the A2 and besides, they aren't actually used to absorb recoil but to allow for a more positive contact point.  It will be interesting to see if someone knows of something to help you.  I know a proud 50 owner that would love to find something that worked well.   ;)

I'm quite sure he would OS. I just got back into AR's since Uncle Sam let me play with one back in the 60's and wondered what all the interest was about. The first one I bought was a S&W 15-22 still stock except for a surplus canvas strap and a 1.5 x 4.5 Weaver scope I bought back in the late 60's. These little black rifles sorta grow on you.
Guess I could get a Limb Saver and tape it on with camo duct tape.

They actually offer one that fits extremely tight on the A2 butt.  No need for tape or anything else.  The biggest problem with ARs is that they seem to multiply like rabbits and will eat you out of house and home.

If you search on http://www.ar15.com/ you can find pics and probably part numbers.

BTW the padded PRS stock from Magpul helps the 50 but that's a whole different thing than what you're looking for.

DixieJ, since you want more LOP I suggest the Command Arms ACC AR15/M16 Sniper Stock carried by Brownells. Its' LOP extends from
10 3/4-14 3/4". I don't know about a recoil pad but perhaps the extended LOP would help with the felt recoil.

SharonAnne, thanks for the tip, but I took the extendable stock off because it developed loose play. OS, they sure do multiply. I am looking at a Remington R15 VTR in .223.  It also comes in a .204 Remington but I can't see the advantage of it over the .223 much less the price difference per round.

DJ, I thing you will find a huge difference between a standard adjustable stock and the Command Arms Sniper Stock. Since Brownells has a life time satisfaction guarantee you could try it and return it if not satisfied.

DixieJack, please let us know how the Enidine hydraulic recoil buffer works out. I have thought of getting one.

Will do.  Just as soon as I find some time.  My wife is having cataract surgery, we are in the process of buying a house in Indiana, getting our house in South Georgia ready to sell, trying to finish up Fall semester at the college I teach at, and helping my sister look after her 88 y.o. husband who is laid up with a broken hip. Whew, I didn't realize I am so busy until I wrote it out. LOL

At the last gun show I handled an AR, the length of pull was checked at 14, 14.5" [we were using a dollar bill] just wondering if any stocks or pads are available to increase the LOP to 15.5-16.0"

I just looked at Brownells selection of recoil pads. There are several slip on pads that add length. There is one AR specific that adds about an inch to LOP. Good luck.

Although I may want a longer stock for prone shooting, most of the time I prefer an A1 stock. It fits exactly from the crook of my elbow to the first pad of my trigger finger.

Showing my lack of knowledge about AR's, Will those listed above fit the full stock on AR-10's ? To the point, an Armalite AR-10T???

My knowledge is probably less than yours, Wayne, when it comes to the AR 15 and AR 10 platforms. My suggestion is to call Limbsaver or which ever brand you want and ask.  I have found that Midway, USA, Cabela's, and Bushmaster's customer service is lacking in supplying any information other than what is in their product description, probably because they carry so many products.  That why I like to do business locally or go to the mfg. for help.
It's just like when I ordered my A2 stock from Bushmaster's. The guy I talked to told me it was black and would match my rifle.  It is actually dark gray.  Not that big of a deal, but I would have look for another brand to find a black one.

DJ, DPMS has a 1" stock extender that fits in front of the stock. They also have a stock that can increase the LOP. It includes the stock, not just the extender. It has a thin, maybe 1/4" pad that I am sure can be replaced with a thicker one. It may take a bit of looking but you can find them.

The spacer is BS20 for "29.95
The extendable stock is BS27 for $199.95
