     A sickly, obese Bronx woman was left stranded in Hungary then died from kidney failure after airline officials booted her from three New York-bound flights because she was too fat, her husband says.
“All we wanted was to come back home to get her treatment,” said a grieving Janos Soltesz, a Staten Island Ferry security guard whose 56-year-old wife, Vilma, died in Hungary nine days after she was kicked off the first of three jets.
 
Vilma, who weighed about 425 pounds, had only one leg and used a wheelchair. She traveled with her husband of 33 years to Hungary on Delta and KLM airlines on Sept. 17.
They spent several relaxing weeks at a vacation home they owned in the Hungarian countryside. It was a trip they took almost every year.
 
Before the journey, their travel agent informed Delta of Vilma’s condition and bought two tickets for her and one for Janos.
They planned to come home Oct. 15 so Vilma could resume treatment with the doctors she had been seeing for years.

regardless of how she became that large, if the couple bought three seats, she should have been allowed to fly.

Ok, obvious question y'all are missing. If she was too fat to fly HOME how the heck did she get to Hungary? Walk?  Was she skinny when she flew there and pigged out once there? Something is fishy about the story.

She had two seats for herself, so the airlines should have made the arraignment to have the required equipment available.  The airlines had the obligation to assure they could get her back home on her scheduled flight.  To my way of thinking she should not have made the trip in the first place.

I saw a picture of her, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone so rotund. Planes are definitely not made for that body type. Can't really fault the airlines. They had to have known that her build would have caused some problems. There's only so much you can do with mass transit. Beyond that, special arrangements like traveling by sea, need to be made. Either that or don't travel like that.

In 1985 I run into the great kokina on a flight from portland ore. to atlanta. at the time he was a 19 year old weighing 425lb  he had just came in from Tokyo where he learned some moves from the sumos.  he took up a little over two seats and needed a volunteer to squeeze in with him. it was a full ship.  super nice guy.

  ---I cannot type my responses to this madness---ceptin to say the A-line may be in BIG trouble. Been to Hungary--It may have been a Russian A-line she was flying. If it was, then, well she may not have completed the flight anyway.

KLM is Dutch, I believe. It sounds like their requirements were different from Delta's for loading, and more importantly, for safety. Older planes are not designed for morbidly obese people. The seats are one issue--- getting her down the aisle would be another, especially with only one leg. Their wheelchairs are designed to fit through the aisle, so if she couldn't get into one of those, she could not be moved to her seat. They should have driven or taken the train to somewhere with different planes. Or, looked for a dialysis clinic. By the way, once you hit 300 lbs, almost NOTHING in medicine works like it should.

They need to consider the limitations of the plane and the safety of the passengers and crew. It's not that unusual for very large people to be denied flights.

So true.  There are a great many complications that make a person's ideal weight a difficult thing to calculate, BUT, if you take in less calories than you burn, you will not reach 425lbs, and no woman's ideal weight is even half that.
 
Except for smoking, nothing is worse than being morbidly obese.  Those two might be a toss-up.

Being that obese, diabetic,poor health, shouldn't have gone in the first place. Sounds like they have money, vacation home in Hungary, flying back every year for a vacation. Looks to me like they should have stayed home and got her treatments and rehab, instead of taking off like that. Don't feel sorry to much, and, don't think the airlines are at fault. gypsyman

I have dealt with people much larger than her. The largest I have helped move was just shy of 1000 lbs. This person broke a bariatric ambulance cot that was supposed to be rated to 1600 lbs in its lowest position. These folks are usually mean and miserable to deal with and are always complaining because the crews cant handle their bulk like a feather. However I wouldnt wish any of them to be stranded and to die somewhere. As someone has already said twice-she got there somehow, she didnt walk there and she didnt hop there. There should have been a way to get her home.

When someone reaches the 1/4 ton mark I think there is mental health issues involved and maybe some other metabolic health issues. No person who is healthy in both mind and body is going to sit down and eat themselves to 500 pounds although this obesity is on the increase. When I started in EMS in the early 1990's in was quite rare to see someone who weighed 400 pounds. It was so rare that there was no specialized equipment to handle them. They got to ride on an overhaul tarp on the floor of the ambulance. Nowadays its common to see people who weigh 400, 500 and even 600lbs. Not as common but still fairly frequent are the folks who top 600 pounds. Something is going on I dont know what it is but I think it isnt as simple as lazyness and gluttony although these factors do come into play. I have been on calls where we had to create a doorway to get the patient out becuase they wouldnt fit through the existing door. Getting that big doesnt happen overnight. Folks like that havent been out of the house in years.

My BIL weighed 517 lbs when he died. I knew him over 25+ years and he was NOT a big eater and ate little takeout crap either. The dr said there was something in his metabolism that turned almost everything he ate to fat. I've seen him diet to the point that he got weak and would almost collapse. He hated his weight.
Like others have said, this lady pd for 2 tickets for herself and darn sure didn't walk there, she should have been allowed to go home. POWDERMAN.

I think a bit of fore thought and planning could have positioned her correctly to make the flight home  safe for all the passengers.  She was sold the tickets, someone should have figured out the logistics.

i am currently dealing with a friend  whose  mother   is ''enabling''  him
she has no concept  that she is killing  him
all she knows how to do is pray....and give him  her xanax when  his script runs out  and he pukes
she  is unable to deal with his problem
but she  keeps him out of jail   so he can pursue his addiction


once someone can't get out to shop or work
its  time  to get them professional help   or just let them die
its  is time to  ADMIT THEIR PROBLEM IS BEYOND YOUR ABILITY TO FIX
this  is not the time  to bring them food/drugs   while the problem just gets worse

Same concept as the First Law of Thermodynamics.  It is IMPOSSIBLE to get fat if you take in less calories than you burn. 
 
The average amount each of us burns is a complicated number, but the end result is the same.  If  you are gaining weight, you are taking in more calories than you will use.
