leaded choke tubes
« on: November 26, 2012, 03:35:35 PM »
I picked up a pair  of used choke tubes . Both modified extended steel tubes for Mossy 500 1 a 20G the other a 12G . They both look like they have had slugs fired through them with heavy deposits of lead . How do I clean them ? And if they did have slugs through them are they hurt? These are for my Pardner pumps.

They make brass leading scrapers for muzzle loaders.  I'm assuming your build-up is right below the choke and it probably isn't just from slugs.  Normally this won't hurt anything if you are using shot, as shot can displace also and lead around the edge.  Most likely just someone who didn't remove the choke to clean occasionally.  I've seen a couple old removable choke guns where they rust right in place and are basically permanent.  If you can get yours out, Just scrape the lead off the bottom edge with something softer than steel.  The only thing I've seen ruin a choke is using steel shot in it if it isn't rated for it or rust.  ;)

Try Hoppes#9 and a brass brush. Let it stay wet with the Hoppes overnight and come back the next day. Go slow
