Advanced Technology 8MM Mauser 98 Stock

I have been hanging out in the single shot forums here at Graybeard, but i do own a WWII 8mm and had a question for you guys that know more about these.

In Cabela's I saw an Advanced Technology Mauser 98 stock.  My 8mm is not tapped for a scope and I have been toying with doing it.  But this Cabela's stock shows that it has scope mounts on the stock, no need to drill and tap the orginial gun to put a scope on it.  I was wondering it this works?  How does Advance Technology assure the stock doesn't move or shift and throw the scope off?

Cracker - I have seen those in the shotgun news and centerfire systems catalogs but have hesitated to get one due to the bolt conversion business.  I have a couple of 98s - 2 vz-24s, a Yugo 48A and a Nazi 98 and have thought about scoping the Yugo and leaving it as a field piece without extensive sporterization.  In this regard I have looked at the various rear sight replacements that are scope mounts - one cantilevers off to the left and the other is a scope rail that replaces the rear folding sight.  There is also a no-gunsmithing set of clamp on scope bases - all of these allow you to see how accurate the rifle is without having to get into the drilling/tapping/bolt cutting and welding.  And, most are less expensive than an oversized stock appearance of the AT stocks.

I would consider a lesser expensive alternative to see how accurate the rifle is before scoping/bolting, etc.  HTH.  Mikey.

The other options sound great.  Where could I find Something like that?

The rifle I have is real pretty.  My dad had the stock cut down to a sportsman stock and put some checkering on it.  He never had the heart to drill the receiver to put on the scope.   I really want to use it to hunt with.  I have shot it with the open sights.  I can group well with it, at 100 yds the bullets are within 3" of each other, but I always seem to get a little horizontal shift from the bull's eye.  It might be me, but my Marlin 30/30 with open sights I am right on.  

I, like you, am a little nervous about the AT stock and bolt deal, didn't even think I could cantilever or clamp on.

Cracker:  check out your Shotgun News, and wear your glasses, as the ads are usually in small print.  Also, Centerfire Systems and Shooters Supply sell the scope mounts for the mausers.  They may be an inexpensive alternative to your final solution.

As for your point of impact drift - Buddy, with those lousy battle sights and probably no bedding in the stock, 3" at 100 yds is pretty OK.  I'll bet a little bedding and free floating of the barrel will close up your groups well enough with open sights so that you will want a scope on that 98 to really zero it in.  Check out those advertisers.  Mikey.

Those stocks are quite good when you throw away the cheesy top part, dremel off pieces that stick out of the side where the top part screws in, then treat it like a normal stock......but you have to drill to put a decent scope on it.

And look for rifles made by FM Sniper. He does these all himself in his base housing on his own equipment, and uses those ATI stocks, surplus Parker Hale barrels, and VZ24 actions.
