55gr Sierra Blitzking vs. Coyote bone (graphic photos)
« on: November 28, 2012, 03:37:36 AM »
For those interested in just what a highly frangible round can do to a coyote at even long distances when smacking them in the bone.  This coyote was taking at just over 300yds with a 22-250 and a 55gr SBK leaving the muzzle at around 3650FPS

It completely anchored the coyote to the ground and after skinning it, you can see why.  The shot placement was good.  But, fast moving highly fangible bullet + coyote bone= big exits.

A closer inspection shows just how big the exit is:

This is the second coyote I have shot with this rifle and 55gr SBK past 250yds.  The other one was at 288yds and I did send the bullet through that dog just behind the shoulder.  That resulted in far less "damage" than what this wound caused.  Do I think the fur is ruined?  No.  My fur buyers are not real concerned with what the leg fur looks like.

I don't plan on changing the load because this weapon is primarily used for Ground Hogs.  But, it does show just what a high frangible/ fast moving bullet can do to a dog.  I said it in another post and I'll say it here again.  My buddy uses the 55gr Sierra SBTs in his 22-250 and they have been outstanding with being fur friendly.
It's all a hot mess...........

You should see what a 70gr SBK launched from an 18" tube in 6x45 inside a 100yd's does to a coyote. Exits are bigger than the palm of my hand.

it does not have to be a highly frangible, high velocity bullet to do that to a yote. i shot a yote with my 6.5x55 the other day at about 150 yrds. at the angle she was standing the bullet entered behind the right shoulder and left a gapeing hole you could stick your fist in where it came out as it destroyed the shoulder ball and socket on the left side shoulder. this was a moderate handload with 140 grn big game bullet.the same bullet ive killed maybe 10 deer with good results and always good exit wounds.hit that big bone knob and id say even a 30-30 would leave a nasty wound.

I always thought the same thing until my buddy started whacking them with a 55gr SBT out of a 22-250.  He has made this same shot inside of 100yds a couple of times now and the exit is nothing like this.  However, there is a big difference betweem 55gr and 140gr
