just had to add my thoughts...  i learned many years ago to 'tweek' the magazines on my High Standards therefore eliminating the problem most people have with these pistols.  for the most part, after a proper 'break-in' a new pistol these days is more accurate than most shooters pulling the trigger, and with proper coaching and practice, you begin to learn the difference in finer points like the trigger break and selecting the ammo your pistol wants to use.  i use a variety of handguns for a variety of purposes, but i must say, if (in a general way) you can afford it, the best American-made rimfire is still one of the fine old company High Standards from Connecticut.  personally i prefer the exposed hammer slant grip heavier barrels like the HD Military or the HE.  i just love the clean trigger. 8)

Keith L, what's the audio report from your pistol like? If it's anything like the .22 mag, I'll have to pass on that. I learned many moon ago that the .22 mags report and my ear don't like each other.

Good question.  I never shot a 22 mag pistol.  I also have never shot this rig without muffs.  I can hardly hear it with the muffs on.  It is far quieter than my 12 inch 30-30 and 10 inch 357 Mag.  In fact if I am in the zone at times I have to look at the target to make sure I shot it.  No kick and little muzzle rise with the 14 inch bbl and bipod hooked on.  Hope this helps...

Keith L, the reason I ask is because as of yet I don't use muffs for hunting ( but probably will in the near future).

I know what you mean.  I don't use muffs for hunting either, but should.  Next time out I will fire a couple without them and report.

Too soon to tell as I just brought it home today.

Local gun show had a brand new S&W Modle 41.  It was wispering my name...I have witnesses, they heard it too.

Anyway I have another 22 pistol to plaly with, this one will likely keep the iron sights if my eyes will cooperate.  Man what a beautiful firearm!!

I'm partial to the Colt Diamondback with the 6" barrel.
The gun has been out of production for awhile, but they can be located by someone with persistance.

I have been around the Ruger auto pistol for 40 years. During that time, I tried them all, customizing them and re-working triggers and such. I don't know what number of small game and grouse that fell to these guns over the years, but between my brothers and I, the amount has been considerable.

After learning that the standard models will shoot right along side the target models(clean up the fixed sights a bit first)I began using one of them for my "preferred" field grade .22 pistol. It sports a Clark trigger, 2 1/4 pound trigger pull and I did an action/trigger job on it for shootability and to enhance reliability. There are many fine pistols out there in .22 lr caliber, but for me......make mine a Ruger Mark II in 6 inch!

I have 7 rimfire .22 from J22 to TC contender, but the one I grab if I realy need to make that shot is the old hi standard model B that I won off of my Granddad 35 years ago. I have been shooting this pistol since I was big enough to hold it. For christmas and birthdays me and my brother got bricks of .22 shells for presents from family and friends. It still took until I was 15 to outshoot granddad.

It sounds like many of you feel the same way that I do about a good and accurate .22lr handgun! I would not consider myself any kind of handgunner at all if not for including a good .22 pistol...They provide so much, for so little!

Has anyone here, handled or shot the Walther P22 yet? Looks good from what I've seen. Small enough to be considered a kit gun.

YES I have this gun,  or rather my wife has this gun.

It IS a lot of fun, she likes the "fit" and feel.

It is not what I consider an accurate gun.

Buy this gun for fun, but it is not a target shooter.

Fred, by not considering it accurate, do you mean it's not good enough for a carry or hunting gun. Just what kind of groups do you and your wife get from this particular firearm? Have you played with the grip inserts, what barrel length do you have on yours? The smaller pistols intrigue me, I now carry a S&W model 63 whenever I'm in the out of doors. If you don't feel comfortable replying here, please send me an personal message.

We have the larger, I believe it is 5 inch barrel.

The grip inserts and the 75% scale of the P-99 is what intrigued me with this pistol.  The groups at 50 feet for me are probably 6-9 inches, with a smith 41 with iron sights they are half of this.

My wife loves this gun, the size is really good for her (she uses the smallest backstrap insert).

Keep in mind that the front sight is how elevation is adjusted, you change the blade with one of three that are provided.   This is simply not  nor will it ever be a target gun.  Break down the gun to examine the barrel, it has a wall thickness  that is laughable.

There is a place for this gun, perhaps a tackle box for plinking, etc.

The Ruger Mark II (or 22-45) is a far better shooter than this P-22.

Hi All,

I guess I wade in on this one and state "I never met a 22 that I didn't like".

My collection goes like this, not necessaryly in order of best:

Hi-Standard Victor
Ruger Mark II 5inch barrel
Thompson Center Contender in 10inch, 14inch, and 16inch
Ruger Single Six
Colt ACE
S & W 617 6inch barrel

Is there more rimfires in my future?  You Bet!

I would like a S&W Model 41 and a Ruger Single Six Hunter Model
and about a million bricks of ammo which should last me a couple of years.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

My vote is the Ruger Mark II 5 1/2 inch bull barrel.  I purchased mine new in 1986 for $161.  Still have the receipt, and the gun.

Favorite .22 handgun?
« Reply #57 on: April 21, 2004, 01:48:58 PM »
My .02, for hunting a T/C Contender with .22 Lr and .22 Mag barrels scoped. (.22 mag noise in a 10 inch isn't bad at all, my Single Six would rattle your fillings)
Target a S&W M41 with Redot 7.5 inch bbl.
Plinking a K-22 with a Redot  6 inch bbl.
For just carrying one around while fishing or camping my second S&W Kit gun 4 inch bbl.  Shot it today off the top of the bench at 50 ft iron sights 1" group with mini-mags, 60 year old eyes and all.  By the way it's my second because I was stupid enough to sell the first.

This topic is like asking which is your favorite supermodel. :)

Target guns:

Walther GSP/GSP Expert
Marvel .22 1911 conversion unit ( by far the best of type)
Hammerli 208
Pardini SP
Smith 41 5"
TOZ 35M Free Pistol- THE single shot tack driver.
Agner Standard Pistol- a real rarity from Denmark, very elegant.

Field and fun guns:

Walther PPK and clones
Walther P22 ( I agree posters, it's a blast to shoot and dirt cheap)
Smith K-22s of all flavors and types
Ruger Bisley
Freedom Arms (.22 single actions, not the mini revolvers.)
Beretta 87- style and performance bello in selle

Can you imagine shooting without the .22LR?
