I am looking at buying my first savage

Guys I am looking at getting a bolt gun for coyotes and was looking for your advice.  What model do you recommend?  I have been looking at the axis and have found mixed reviews.

   I have a Savage model 12 in 204 Ruger. It is heavy but shoots better than any rifle i have ever owned.

I have a Savage Edge.....pre Axis, and absolutely love it!
While its not a beautiful stock(everyone's gripe) it will drive tacks at 100 yards. I have a .223 and after a little trigger work (YouTube) I have a crisp 3 pound trigger.
I also have a Savage model 10 in a .243 with Accutrigger and it is also a tack driver.
I think that you will be very impressed with a Savage, and don't have to sell the house to buy one

No argument, Savage has earned it's great reputation for accuracy.  I'm not familiar with all the prices, but if you can get the regular Savage  with accutrigger for another $100 bill...you ought to spring for that..
   I'm quite sure you have your mind settled, but if you are still open, consider the new Ruger American..it is entry level... like the Axis, but it has Ruger's own version of accutrigger and some special mounting for the barrel.  They are getting great reviews for accuracy.  I have been a Savage fan for years, but recently I bought a Ruger American .308 for deer..and got one with it and I have no regrets.  Also...the Ruger rotary cylinder is a plus!!

  No doubt, you have a winning combination there, BBF.  My Ruger American .308 Win cost me $259, I don't know what a trigger would have cost me..but there was no need, since the Ruger trigger is very nice as delivered.
  I have an older Savage #11 in .223 Rem without the accutrigger..the basix would be nice..

I like Rugers and had several #1's in the past and still have a M77. I believe the American wasn't available at that time.
The Basix trigger for the Axis is so similar to the original Savage item that it would have cost a few bucks and I mean few to have it working like the Basix design.
There are two differences between them for the Axis.
 
The spring controlling the trigger pull is located on a different spot and has a screw which allows to preload it and there is one additional screw that adjusts the sear engagement height.

I'm am not set on any one gun.  If I were to go a step up on the savage to get to the accutrigger what are you recommending?  I will take a look at the ruger.  Thanks.

Get you a savage  stevens mod 200 and dont look back ,they are good guns and they  shoots great to, i have one in 22-250 for a yote gun it shoots great to,i wouldnt traid my for any thing,i think i herd they quit makeing this rifle but they are still out there to be had

The advantage with the Stevens is that the factory trigger is somewhat adjustable. Not so much with the Axis unless you don't mind cutting springs.

I own several Savages and have worked on more than I can remember.  I say this because I loved each and every one. I have worked on a load and trigger for a Axis.  The trigger can easily be worked on to get 2 pounds but that isn't the main issue with the Axis.  The stock will flex at palm.  While the gun shoots fine I didn't fine this too appealing.  Again, the rife shoots well but I would like to suggest a model Savage I feel is one of the best deals in the Savage line.  Look in the the Savage 11/111 Hunter XP line.  This is with the Accutrigger and Optics.  The glass(optics) is a Nikon!  With a little work you can get one of these package guns for around $500.00 !!!   Yes, I own one in 243 and like all savages shoots very well.

I am a Savage Fanatic!  I currently own 9 of them, and am always adding to the family.   One secret about Savages is that all of them have barrels cut on the same machines and made with the same process.  What this means to you is that the cheapest most inexpensive Savage still shoots like a Savage.  If I were in the market for my first, I would chose either a Stevens 200 (this was Savage's budget line before the Axis/Edge) or one of the model 11/16/14/10 series.  These are all the same action and barrel as well, just different aftermarket accessories.   I am very fond of the accutrigger, and I think it is by far the best factory trigger and even better than many aftermarket ones.  It is user adjustable, and if you ever wish to can be modded to safely break down to 1 pound or even less.   The Edge/Axis line is great as long as you dont plan to modify the rifle much.  There are currently no aftermarket stocks for this rifle, with none planned in the near future.  The 11/10/Stevens line has many, many aftermarket accessories.    Good luck with your choice...every one I own is an absolute Tack Driving Lazer of a rifle!

      I stated above that my Ruger cost me $259..sorry, I believe I was $100 off..more like $359..

My Axis in 223 I bought this year, is the most accurate out of the box gun I've ever owned or shot....period....and I've shot just about all of them.  I slicked the trigger...all else is stock.  It shoots every load I' ve tried very well.
