Encore has lost appeal
« on: November 29, 2012, 10:49:47 AM »
I used to shoot a Contender back in the 90's. It was real accurate. About three years ago I purchased a Prohunter Encore pistol frame and added 2 barrels: a TC custom shop 300 win mag and a 22-250. I figured these would give accuracy and more horse power that the Contender. Horse power yes, accuracy no. The point of aim seems to change or is finicky about having a bipod on it, something my Contender never had a problem with. Then I purchased a XP 100 in 7mm IHMSA. Wow! I have shot a 1/4" group for the first time in my life with that gun. It may not have the horse power of the Encore but the accuracy with decent power is amazing. I know it will do its part if I do mine, everytime.
I am now thinking of selling the Encore and get another XP100 or add to my revolver collection. I know my barrels don't have hanger bars, but my Contender was always moa in 30-30 and didn't change point of aim with a bipod. What do you Encore guys think?

I am not an Encore guy.  I have Contenders.  I will say about them that they are not for everyone.   If they are not for you go for what you like.

I'm a 'Tender and XP guy. I have owned the Encores but they never had the appeal of the Contender for me. With 5 barrels, I can say they all shoot great. As for the XP not having horsepower, I'd dare say my .300 WSM XP has all the thump one could want. Granted, it's a full house custom, but a hammer nonetheless. I committed to buy a gently used 7 BR XP recently, I have a feeling it'll eventually wind up as a 6.5 Creedmoor.

I agree that a custom XP 100 in one of the short mags would be all the horse power you would need. Maybe some day. I think I will keep a watch out for a xp or revolver of my liking and make the trade someday. Thanks for the input guys.

After shooting Contenders from '68 very heavily I bought an Encore as soon as they came out with 12" 454, 15" 22-250 and 15" 7BR factory barrels, and custom furniture with a hanger bar.   Took getting 2 more factory 22-250 barrels to get one to shoot descent but not spectacular; the 454 was OK but nothing to brag about; the 7BR was amazing and the only factory barrel I ever owned worth the price of addmission.   It rivaled all my XP-100's and Wichita's shooting BB IHMSA, was a 40X40 shooter from the first match that was also spot on for shoot offs (nothing could beat it).   Ended up buying more frames and custom barrels for them over the next couple of years... but stayed away from anymore factory barrels and bought custom only.   Loved the 10" 416 Rigby, the 223 did OK but nothing special and all the others in between couldn't do anything as well as my Contenders had been doing in spades for years.   Almost kept one frame and the 7BR barrel, but had too many Contender wildcats that did the same or better, the 416 was just a toy I had no use for otherwise and I already had a bunch of cannon wildcat barrels for the Contenders, so sold all of the Encore stuff and never looked back at them again.    The extra weight may help some with recoil with the handcannons, but with so many years shooting Contender cannons recoil was not a factor for me... as a rifle maybe a draw for some folks as well, but since my Contender wildcat handguns could do the same as any Encore rifle I figured why bother, so I never owned an Encore long barrel.  They're all gone now except for one XP, and it will go as well when I get around to it.   But it was a fun ride for about 4 decades.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus
