Put my mind at ease..
« on: November 29, 2012, 02:24:31 PM »
I had to get a pawn loan on my Glock 27 today. Before entering the store I was required to lock the slide back and leave it open.

I forgot to close/request that they close it before putting it in storage. Assuming it will be in pawn a little over a week, should I be at all concerned about the recoil spring? Its only got 100 rounds through it as of now

well poopers, I wish I could give you a guarantee that no harm would be done, but springs weaken when held compressed over time.  I'm sorry, but your only hope may be a clerk that knows guns, and perhaps was thoughtful enough to release the slide.

Since I was in the pawn business, the reason you were required to lock the slide back is for everyones safety, nothing personel, and since space in the safes is at a premium this time of year I am certain they will close the slide as open it takes up more space, hope every thing works out for you so you can redeem in a short time as long term storage causes some scratches and dings on occasion no matter how carful you try to be.  Jim

If being locked open for a week actually hurts the Glock, it wasn't worth the price of admission to buy it.    IOW, I wouldn't worry about it, a week is not long term storage for years and springs are not that fragile.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

We compress our magazine springs for much longer periods of time and never think twice.

No big deal---if you're really worried about it --a new spring is like $10 bucks

If it will help you rest better think about this. About half the valve springs in your car are compressed as you sleep, and the ones in your lawn mower will spend the entire winter that way. :o

It'll be fine, cycling does the damage not rest. How about those magazine springs in the cops gun? Trust me he ain't emptying them each night.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Im TOO paranoid about springs. I almost never keep my magazines more than 1/3 full when they are pulling nightstand duty in the house.

I wouldn't be concerned with springs. I discussed this with a metallurgical engineer some years ago. He stated that the number of cycles, loading and unloading of the spring shortened the working life of a modern spring at double the rate of long term compression. I have personally used magazines that had been loaded 10+ years that worked just fine. My regular routine is to load magazines when I clean my guns after a match, and leave them loaded for the next weekend. So that makes 20 Glock mags that stay loaded sometimes a month at a time, depending on which caliber I'm shooting.  We won't even mention those AR mags I keep in my war bag! I change recoil springs in my game guns at around 5k rds. When I compare the length of the old one to the new one, there is very little difference. Mag springs I change when I'm bored, or when they get to feeling soft when I'm reloading them. If you're still worried about your mag springs for you nightstand gun to the point where you're loading to 1/3 capacity, get a revolver for that task and you'll never have to worry about mag springs.
Hope you get your pistol back soon!

Please enlighten me how to always have money on hand for unexpected medical trips to urgent care that require cash up front. Oh and don't forget the prescription on the same day and rent a few days later!

Thanks!

Poopers, despite the incorrect way the matter was broached, those who use "pay day loans" and pawn shops and other places end up in a vicious circle due to the extraordinarily high interest these places charge.  Things happen, it's just life, but if you could save up an emergency fund you would not need those places.

I agree with most posts abt working on getting your finances in order, however all PAWN SHOPS are not rip-off places!!  Those who know me and have been to the one I was in will tell you that it was a clean and friendly place to come, we did offer a service of loaning money but we never forced anyone to enter and do so.  There are people who dont have credit cards where they can pay off a emergency, you cant go into a bank and barrow a $100 and walk out in 5 min, you can barrow a larger amt. but you will be there for some time begging, no matter where you barrow your money it will be expected of you to re-pay the loan.  Jim

Its the first time in my life I have pawned anything. It was a mom and pop shop, very friendly people! I went and picked up my Glock yesterday and the magazine was loaded and the slide was closed, so the guy must just do that by default because I sure didnt!

...or he was out back shooting it  ;D

Anyhoo, in my opinion, guns are the best asset a fellow can have. I have NEVER lost money selling a gun, and some of my old guns paid for my wedding, my wife's ring and the cost of moving 500 miles West.

I have a couple of guns that have done better than my 401K.    I probably should have invested more money in guns.  Of course the Government will probably confiscate both before it's over.   :-[

45/70, you said "i did  have 24 guns stolen tho a few years back...he was a snitch  so  the police did nothng."
And that the guy that had them was dead.
Is the dead guy the same guy that stole them?
I can't imagine a police department not placing felony charges against a person they knew was guilty, snitch or not.
