Holland and Holland Double Rifle
« on: December 01, 2012, 02:46:17 PM »

A nice Holland and Holland Double rifle. I'm new to this type of gun.  They want $100,00 for this gun and I was thinking if this is a good starter's gun to get into this type of shooting.  I was thinking of the .470 NE.

Doing more research and some more  affordable used Holland & Holland  double rifles are avail for much less... this one for $42,000.00.  Much more sensible.   A good value for the money.

If only....yes, either would be nice for a novice or an experienced double aficianado.

We definitley play in different playgrounds.  My "entry" double, almost 20 years ago, was a $2,000.00 German double from the late 1870's and I made payments on it!!!!

There is nothing "entry level" about any firearm made by H&H.

Well I wouldn't, I don't think I could sleep at night with a 100,000$ gun in the house. I'd be worried something would happen to it.  ;)

If it was mine, it would be MADE FOR ME, and that means it would go hunting with me no matter what/where i hunted or how much it was worth.

That's the way it works around here, buy it, use it!

BTW, how many of you have a $50,000.00 vechile that you leave outside, drive in the rain and cold???  How much will that vechile be worth 10 years from now??

I would be a lot more likely to own a 50K rifle than a 50K vehicle....neither of which will ever happen, but I would spend that much on a rifle long before I'd spend it on a vehicle...for the question you asked at the end.  And, I would be using the rifle too.  Well....IF I had it and IF it could be done I would spend 50K on a late 50's Mercedes 300SL Gullwing.  One stands as good a chance of happening as the other.

One of the iconic cars. You could have bought one back in the early 60's , used of course, for between $5k and $10k.
Nowadays...$50k? The last three that I saw for sale were at 650k, 850k and 1.4mil.
I am frequently surprised at what people decide that they can afford if they really want something. A bespoke DR by H&H, though, like that Gullwing,  is really the stuff of dreams for this fellow.

In 1965 I bought a good used house for $4500.  ;) and several good used winchester 94s for $50 a piece. And life was good.

dark, I know.  I like to follow the classic sports car market too and I belive your prices are spot on.  That's all I can do is follow it!!!  My "claim" to a vintage sports car is an all original 1974 MG-B that is still in remarkably good condition.  80K original miles and still has good compression.....today.  I'm with you, the H&H and Gullwing are dreams.

Amazing, ain't it pastor.  My first house was $19,000 brand new in 1974.  'Course it was only about 1200 sq. ft. and no basement but it was ours and our payment was $125.00 a month.  I remember not being able to buy a pre-64 Win. Mod. 70 Featherweight because it was too expensive at $150.00, or 150 acres with no house near my home town that was $18,000.00.   An life was still good!!

I looked at the fact I spent 8000.00 on accessories on my truck, and lost that and the depreciation and the interest on the financing on my truck. I figured I could lose a heck of a lot less on a double rifle, and it wouldn't really matter in the scheme of things, when compared to what we lose driving a vehicle off the lot.
So, I ordered a double rifle for myself. Not an H&H, but, still cost me less than the loss on the truck did.
I figure I owed it to myself to have one really nice gun, built the way I wanted it. And I get to pick it up on Friday. You only live once, may as well enjoy it.

Generally confused is a normal state of affairs, let me know if I ever figure it out.
