XP Centergrip stock advice
« on: January 01, 2003, 03:26:58 PM »
I am planning to build a XP for freestyle (UAS and U) shooting.
Can anyone give me information regarding what center grip stocks are available, along with their benefits and drawbacks?  For example, length of pull, weight, price, etc?  I have average size hands, and actually find the factory Nylon stock to fit pretty well.

Thanks, Mike

Make mine McMillan

I too am in need of a center grip stock. Based solely on price and availability I am buying a McMillan in the next few weeks. I don't know what the grip feels like in my hand, haven't had the opportunity. I am not completely happy that they have an ambidextrous grip.

If money was not a factor, I would get an HS Precision. A fellow I know has one and it fit my hand perfectly.

I hope there are more replies here, I too could benefit from the input.

First off, if the factory stock fits your hand well, why not still use it?  I have a buddy who shoots a stock xp in 7br with the factory plastic stock and he is hard to beat.

Next, there is a company called Brown Precision out on the west coast somewhere that has nice fiberglass stocks that need lots of finish work. The McMillans are great as well. Also you can take a gob of auto body putty and stick it on the stock handle.....then while it is still wet and setting up take your shooting hand (hand in plastic glove with release agent all over it) get into shooting position and grip the gun against your leg just like you are going to shoot in a match.  Let your hand grip the gun for about 3 or 4 miniutes and then let it set up hard. Use various grinder or sand paper attachments to your hand drill to smooth it all out. You now have a custom finger groove xp stock. LOTS of shooters in Reg 3 have done it this way and it works. Once you paint the whole stock it looks pretty nice too....

If you are having problems getting a good price or delivery on a McMillan stock, Lester Bruno in AZ sometimes has them in stock ready to go. He can also get one pretty quick as he is  on the same block in AZ as McMillan stock company.

Why not factory stock?

Good Question !

Even thought he factory stock fits, I was mostly trying to say that the reach of the factory stock was comfortable.   The barrel channel is too small (seems like opening it up would be difficult), and I am not optimistic about achieving a good bedding job in the nylon.   I guess that since I will be spending a good deal of money accurizing the XP, I am desiring a higher quality stock.

I was hoping that this topic would generate a comprehensive list that could be used as a resource for future XP builders regarding what is available in the way of stocks, along with the pertinent features, cost, and availability.

Interesting idea about the body putty route.  However, I am not a big fan of "anatomical fitting" grips.

Keep ths input and opinions coming guys!

Cheers, Mike

I acquired my first XP in 7BR two years ago. It had a McMillan stock on it and I love it. This fall I purchased my second XP, also in 7BR, that had the factory nylon stock. I used if for UAS and had trouble with the gun torquing a little. Two weeks ago I ordered a McMillan for it. Now both guns will match.

The lead time on a McMillan stock is about 10 to 12 weeks right now. If you want one to start the spring matches, now would be the time to order it.

I have used an H-S Precision stock on a 7mm BR for several years and am building a new UAS gun with a second.  You will not regret buying a quality stock and with the new weight limitations all works well.  The modifications required to fit an XP are minor.

Can anyone comment on the difference in grip size and length of pull between the McMillan and HS Precision?
